Disputed Origins

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about the Leonard family of New England. No link to any armigerous family for this line of Leonards or Whites has been validated.

Biography

Elizabeth White's birth location, date, and parents are unknown. The only source identifying her surname is the account of her grandaughter Hannah Leonard Deane.[1] No account of her marriage to Thomas Leonard has been found. Her forename is solely confirmed by the birth records of at least three of her children with Thomas Leonard.[2]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents: Richard White (abt.1555-1614) and Katherine (Strode) Whyte (abt.1513-1579) were previously attached and removed as Elizabeth's parents on 9 Nov 2017. See the change history for this profile. A reliable source proving this relationship has not been found. (Contact: Laurence Mohr)

I keep seeing on other sites her parents being listed as "Richard White" and "Marion De Plowden" from Essex, then it goes on to this long line of gentrified ancestors. I have known this is not the correct Leonard (or "Lennard") family, keep taking it off, keep writing my sources, and it keeps returning. Well- nothing I can do- it's a public tree and all.

Both of the sources provided on this page link to obviously incorrect information.

Can we definitively clarify in these profiles that Lennard family is not related to the Leonard family? Or, is that still uncertain.

This source seems to the best, that I've found:

What's the policy standard / best practice for locations like this, where it changes names and states over time?

This comes up all over New England, not just in this early era, but later, with Maine etc. It seems clunky as-is... and I'm not sure I want to read "xxx Massachusetts Colony (now yyy Maine, USA)" or similar in West Virginia etc.

Consider what this would look like for the bulk of SW US, or even California... would we say Mexico, if we took this formatting syntax and made it a site-wide policy?

Thoughts?

These Whites and Leonards remain problematic. Is anybody working on this, who's found credible sources?

There's all kinds of dubious descents claimed through this couple, which I'd love to get to the bottom of. I believe them to be direct ancestors, but all the sketchy data over the years (before and after them) has me scratching my head.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Re: This profile and Thomas Leonard. They probably did not immigrate to New England. Alleged sons John and James came but their parents are in no way certain according to the bios. They are both marked as questionable gateway ancestors. You could try contacting someone from the Magna Carta Project for help or alternately the England Project or you could try asking for help in G2G.

Dates for many people in this line are obviously incorrect. It appears the White line as shown may include unrelated individuals. The Leonard line found on many online trees is notoriously inaccurate. I do not have sufficient records to correct his beyond what is given by Hannah Leonard Deane. I have none on the White line as shown .
