James Clarke Whitehead was born Christchurch in 1865, to parents George Whitehead and Mary Clark. [1]
In 1898, he married Emma Houghton. He was widowed in January 1901, when Emma died at the age of 26.
Later in 1901, he was implicated in the pregnancy of Emma’s younger sister Elizabeth, who had been engaged in domestic duties when her sister was confined to bed rest. It is widely accepted that he was the father of her child, Arthur Houghton, although the circumstances will never be known. Elizabeth was only 15 at the time.[2]
In 1906, he married Mary Fulcher. [3]
He passed away in 1963. [4]
