John Whitehead was born in Trieste, Austria-Hungary, on 23 November 1854. His father, Robert Whitehead (1823-1905) invented the modern torpedo. When the British showed no interest in this invention, Robert built his torpedo factory at Fiume (present-day Rijeka, Croatia) which is in an inlet of the Adriatic Sea. John Whitehead grew up working with his father in the factory and later became a partner. He married Countess Agathe Gobertina von Breunner and they had six children. He died of stomach cancer in Vienna on 9 April 1902.[1]
One of John's children was Agathe, who married the famous Georg Ludwig Ritter von Trapp (1880-1947).
