The story of Rebecca Whitehead and her husband David Daniel Tolley comes from the book "The Clark and Tolley Families of Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina and Related Families" published in 1994. The story follows with the author's (Robert Bradley Clark) permission.
"Dan Tolley was born in Ledger in 1830 and died in Carter county Tennessee February 19, 1916. He married Rebecah Whitehead on May 7, 1864, in Carter county. Dan was the brother of Francis Tolley Jr. and his wife Rebecah was the sister of Polly Whitehead who married Francis Tolley Jr.
The children of Daniel and Rebecah were Dempsey, Charlie, Doc, Ellie, John, Brown, Sam, Emma, Ella, and Jennie Tolley. The true [full correct] name of Jennie is not certain as her tombstone had the name "Annie" engraved on it.
Dempsey Tolley married Lodema Tolley and they lived in Carter county. Their children were: Mae, Bertha, Vista, Caleb, Joshua, and Cleo Tolley.
Mae married a Dunn then later married Harrison Woodby. Harrison was the son of Bill and Margaret Woodby.
Bertha married Arthur Woody ... Arthur was well known throughout the area as the man who wove baskets from strips of wood. He would soak the wooden strips in water to get them very flexible so he could shape the basket without cracking the strips. These were beautiful, sturdy baskets and fine examples of a rare basket-making talent... [On occasion, he would take his baskets to Johnson City, Tennessee, and sell them there. He traveled the "old fashion" way, he walked. His hike zigged and zagged through the dense woods and over Stone Mountain and eventually, he arrived in Johnson City. The round trip had to be 30 miles or more and it had to be difficult given the uneven route over the mountain. He set out around 3 AM and got home that evening after dark. He carried the baskets on his back.]
Vista married Arthur's brother Grant Woodby. Arthur and Grant's parents were Cameron Woodby and Jane Carver.
