Biography

Elizabeth (nee Whiteside) Stockton was a daughter of William Whiteside and Elizabeth Stockton.

She married Davis Stockton, a first cousin. He was a son of Samuel and Prudence (nee ___?___) Stockton. Elizabeth and Davis were both grandchildren of Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761).

The William Whiteside family lived next to Whiteside's Branch of Mechum's River near the small town of Batesville in Albemarle County, Virginia. This is probably where Elizabeth Whiteside was born. The Samuel Stockton family lived nearby as did Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761).

Both the William Whiteside family and the Samuel Stockton family moved to Tryon (now Rutherford) County, North Carolina, before the Revolutionary War.

Elizabeth's date of birth is not known. She appears to have been born between 1760 and 1770. Census records are only a guide, they are not proof of anything.

  • The 1810 census shows her as 45+ so born before 1765.
    • In the 1810 census she is also shown with 3 children 0-10.
  • The 1820 census shows her as 45+ so born before 1775.
  • The 1830 census shows her as 60-70 so born between 1760 and 1770.
  • Her son Davis Stockton appears to have been born in the year 1800, so Elizabeth must have been born later than 1750 (to be under 50 when he was born).
  • If Elizabeth was born between 1760 and 1770 as shown in the 1830 census Elizabeth would have been between 30 and 40 when son Davis was born in 1800.
