Joseph first appeared as an adult in a 1794 tax list for Fayette County, Kentucky, but about 1798 he settled on Brush Creek in present-day Oldham County, Kentucky. With his first wife Elizabeth he joined the Eighteenmile Baptist Church in 1801,[3] and in 1807 he began assisting his cousin (who was also his brother-in-law) Col. Benjamin Coons with maintaining the Old Westport Road from Harrods Creek to Currys Fork. On August 27, 1813 he was mustered in Capt. Edward George's Company of Kentucky Mounted Militia. On July 26, 1827 he purchased from William Taylor for $100 the 120 acres between Brush Creek and the Old Westport Road where he had been residing for years.[4] On September 5, 1843 he devised five slaves between his four children by his first wife,[5] and two days later married Mrs. Susanna Callander.[6] He was appointed guardian of her children by Abraham Callander on April 15, 1844. On January 20, 1845 he received letters of administration for the estate of his first wife Elizabeth, as she was a legatee in her father's will.
