1) History of Tennessee. By Goodspeed Publishing Company. Page 1115: "Joseph W. Whitfield came from a line of ancestors who came from North Carolina to Tennessee in 1793. He was a descendant of George Whitfield, the preacher and was of Welsh-English descent. They were hardy, industrious and law-abiding and were ever ready to protect the weak in those times of lawlessness and savage warfare. His father, Lewis and his uncles, Needham and Bryan Whitfield, were of a family of 28 children and their descendants are found in nearly all the Southern states.

The three brothers settled in Montgomery County, Tennessee, Lewis on land now owned by Watton Barker and C. N. Meriwether, which land (now worth $500,000) he traded for a negro woman and 8 children.

His eldest son, Joseph W., our subject, was born 8/23/1806 and was married in 1833 to his cousin, Marian (Whitfield) Fox, daughter of Needham Whitfield and widow of J. D. Fort.

To their union were born Joseph N., Constantine, Needham L., Robert C., Sallie C., Mary L., James W., and Henry C.

Joseph W. Whitfield and family were the organizers of the old Baptist Spring Creek Church. They, in conjunction with the Killebrews, Johnsons, Forts, Metcalfs, Redfords, and other branches of the family, hold a family reunion each year. Miriam, the mother, has a fine recollection. All of the family are Democrats."

2) Spring Creek Baptist Church in Montgomery County, Tennessee. Now on their third building that Spring Creek Baptist Church has had in its long history. The first building was a log type building of rough hewn logs. Spring Creek was first organized as an arm of Fort's Meeting Houe or Red River Church by James and Isaac Renfro and others near the north bank of Spring Creek. The old log building was used for 28 years. The second building was of frame and superior to the first one. It was built in 1821 about 1 mile from the first site and on the opposite side of the creek and was used until 1852. It was sold to Mr. Ferguson for $76.00 and being moved to his farm. Part of this building still stand on the farm. A movement to expand was prompted by the Bethel Association in 1850 when they pleaded with the churches to consider the spiritual need of their slaves. They were urged to build larger churches where ever necessary. As Spring Creek was very small, they made plans which were completed in 1852 at the cost of $1320. They were to consider the spirit and souls of the Negroes of their community and realize that the slaves they owned were human beings and should be taugh the love of God. Baptist Churches were asked to lead in this need. This being ten years before the Civil War. The land was given in part by Joseph Whitfield and John E. Pollard. From a booklet, Spring Creek Baptist Church 1808 - 1983. 175 Years.

3) Montgomery County, Tennessee where Joseph lived was formed in 1796.

4) His father, Lewis and his siblings: Needham, Lewis, Robert, Sarah, Elizabeth, George, Bryan, Susan, Catherine Whitfield are listed as Pioneers to Tennesse in a list compiled by Vallie Jo Fox Whitfield, wife of Robert Edward Whitfield.

Research Notes

In book & notes from my father's research, he ?'s if his middle name could have been "Wimberly" after his mother's maiden name. No record has been found to prove or disprove this.

  • Information about Spring Creek Baptist Church. "The First Baptist Church of Clarksville, grew out of the congregation of the Spring Creek Baptist Church which was established in 1808 and is one of the earliest Baptist churches in

Montgomery County. The First Baptist Church began by meeting for services at the courthouse in Clarksville under the direction of Elder Reuben Ross in 1831. Ross was the pastor of the Spring Creek Baptist Church and made visits to Clarksville on a monthly rotation. The original congregation consisted of 17 members and had grown to 53 by 1841. During this time the church purchased a piece of property in downtown Clarksville and began raising funds to construct a permanent church building which was completed in 1843." https://mcgtn.org/storage/departments/archives/publications/First%20Baptist%20Church%20Collection%20-%20Finding%20Aid.pdf
