Mary Whiting was born in Tasmania to Edward Whiting and Eliza Walbourn. She sailed with her family in 1862 to Otago and spent her early childhood in Southland. Mary married in 1874, at St Paul's, Wellington to Andrew Compton of Boulcott Street Sawmills. Mary's health deteriorated in her last years and she died age 48 and is buried at Karori cemetery. CH of E PLOT 21 R.
