George enlisted as a private on 4 March 1862 in Company F of the 49th Georgia Infantry. He was captured at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. George was sent to Fort Delaware, Delaware on 22 October 1863. He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland on 18 February 1865 and was received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia on 20 February 1865.
