Gladys Irene McCormick, 89 of Meridian died unexpectedly at 11:45 a.m. Saturday in Butler Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Alfred B. "Buss" McCormick, died Tuesday at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 12, 1917, in Ellwood City, she was the daughter of Samuel Irvin Whitmire and Effie VanGorder. She retired in 1980 from the family owned business, McCormick's Market, an independent grocery business she and her husband began in Brownsdale in 1945. Mrs. McCormick enjoyed meeting new neighbors in the market and knew all the customers and their children by name. Prior to working at the market, she had worked in the dietary department at Butler Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Christ Community United Methodist Church. She was devoted to her husband and family. She loved family gatherings, family vacations, bus tours and playing cards. In retirement, she hosted many family milestone parties including graduations and birthdays. She was an excellent example to all who knew her and she will be truly missed. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald McCormick. MCCORMICK - Friends of Gladys Irene McCormick, who died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, and Alfred B. "Buss" McCormick, who died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St. Services for Gladys and Alfred will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Lisa Grant, their church pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Butler County Memorial Park, Butler Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Community Methodist Church, 205 N. Duffy Road, Butler, PA 16001.
