Previously Questioned Pedigree

Earlier scholarship by Henry Melville[1]had Thomas Whitney as son of Robert and Elizabeth (Guillams) Whitney of Lambeth, Surrey, England. This Robert was then cited to be the son of Sir Robert and Sybil Baskerville Whitney. Problems were noted in these accounts, which were thought to be the timing of Thomas' birth, and thus doubtful parentage of John.

Modern scholarship, especially by Robert Leigh Ward and Tim Doyle,[2] shows that, yes, there are dating issues, but that these issues are not with Thomas as father of John, but were with the parentage of Robert, Thomas' father. Ward and Doyle concluded that John Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts was a son of this ThomasA Whitney of Castleton, son RobertB Whitney, son of RobertC Whitney, possibly the son of Robert Whitney and Elizabeth Vaughan.

However, in 2013 Adrian Burke took a closer at the will of RobertB Whitney.[3][4] It was clear that his son Thomas was of full age when he wrote his will in 1555, so born by 1534. This makes him too old to be the same as ThomasA Whitney who began having children in 1584. Robert Whitney has been disconnected as his father.

John Whitney as son of Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray of Westminster, London, is probably confirmed. Thomas Whitney's birth date and place of birth, however, are different than previously thought. Thomas was born about 1550 in Castleton, a part of Clifford, Herefordshire, across the river Wye from Whitney-on-Wye.

Biography

Thomas was born about 1560 based on his marriage in 1583. Earlier statements that he was born about 1550 resulted from the false belief that he was the son of Robert Whitney and Elizabeth Guillims (Williams) of Westminster, London, according to Ward and Doyle.[2]

He obtained, May 10, 1583, from the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, a license to marry Mary Bray, in which document he is mentioned as "Thomas Whytney of Lambeth Marsh, Gentleman."[5] Note: Lambeth Marsh is across the Thames bridge from Westminster.

Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray were married 12 may 1583 at Saint Margaret in Westminster, London, England.[6]

Thomas and Mary had the following children, all baptized in Westminster:

  • Margaret, born 1584, died 1604;
  • Thomas, 1587, died 1587[7]
  • Henry, 1588, died 1589[8]
  • Arnwaye, 1590, died, 1591[9]
  • John 1592[10]
  • Nowell, 1594, died 1597[11]
  • Francis, 1599, died at Westminster, 1643[12]
  • Mary, 1600, died 1600[13]
  • Robert, 1605, died in parish of St. Peter's, Cornhill, London, England, 1662.[14]

He apprenticed his son, John, on February 22, 1607, and his son, Robert, on November 8, 1624.[5]

In 1611 he paid the subsidy tax, and on December 6, 1615, on the probate of the will of his father-in-law, John Bray, he was appointed executor.[5]

At the time of his death, in 1637, administration of his estate was granted, May 8, 1637, to his remaining sons, Francis and Robert.[5]

Thanks, Ann. Looks like Hertfordshire was left over from a disputed connection.

The 2007 research of Ward and Doyle made him a son of Robert Whitney of Castleton. However, Adrian Burke showed in a TAG article in 2014 that on closer examination of Robert Whitney's 1555 will that this is not possible. Robert Whitney has been disconnected as the father of this Thomas Whitney.

Robert Whitney's WRG page shows him as having a son named Thomas; however, this Thomas has no page of his own, and the biography mainly details a court case pertaining to his having inadvertently killed Howell Watkins. To my knowledge, John Whitney is also not included in the most recent "Plantagenet Ancestry" by Douglas Richardson or Gary Boyd Roberts's "Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants" that was released this year."

Carleton I too agree with the original posting by Anonymous but that doesn't diminish my comment. The Whitney Research Group does not make any scholarship or academic claims on its web site nor, outside of family tree's, does it post any primary sources. If they were protecting their research by not posting primary sources they, being scholars, should have clarified instead instead of giving the appearance of relying upon secondary sources for their analysis and conclusions. That sets a bad precedent and opens the flood-gates for all sorts of bad secondary-source conclusions. That's the purpose of my initial comment. Leigh Anne
Whitney Research Group does indeed have source citations and references. Moreover, their members have published in The American Genealogist several papers about the ancestry of Thomas Whitney & Mary Bray. Find A Grave has been updated with some of this research that was published within the past 10 years. I think Find A Grave may have links to the published works I've referenced. I concur with the 2018 message by K Anonymous.

The Whitney Research Group is undefined with no disclosure as to the level of professional standards it represents. Additionally, it notes only opinion cited from personal family tree's. Not that the assertion about his parentage isn't tru but it's still an unsourced assertion. Just saying.
The Whitney Research Group, on this page ("Alleged Royal Ancestry of John Whitney, http://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/Alleged_Royal_Ancestry_of_John_Whitney) indicates that it is doubtful that Thomas Whitney was the son of Robert Whitney and Elizabeth Guillims. I think his parentage should be marked uncertain unless something more recent found-the TAG article was discussed at length over at Gen-Medieval as well.

Whitney-3449 and Whitney-131 appear to represent the same person because: Appears to be same person

Bray-203 and Bray-1344 seem to be the same person. I purpose a merge as there was only one wife named Mary Bray to Thomas Whitney. The dates are off but it is the same person that is listed twice d/t GEDCOM import.

Records researched and known are parents of Mary to be John and Margaret (Haslonde) Bray and date of baptism 24 Dec 1564, St. Margaret's, Westminster, England, and was buried 25 Sep 1629, St. Margaret's Church, Westminster, England. Marriage researched and recorded as 12 May 1583, St. Margaret's, Westminster, England

Siblings also listed and no record of a Abigail in documents known, but were 7 siblings Please merge Thank you

Whitney-1699 and Whitney-131 appear to represent the same person because: Same names, near same dates of birth, same father, same spouse, same death dates. Please merge. Thanks
