Biography

Howard was born in 1855 in Standish, Cumberland County, Maine. He is the son of Isaac Whitney and Mary Dyer. [1]

In 1860 he was five years old and living with his mother and his ten-year old sister Mary E. Whitney. Howard’s father had passed away the year before, in May 1859. They were living in Standish, Maine with Howard’s paternal grandparents Joseph (83) and Mary (81). [2] In 1880 Howard’s fifty-six year old mother Mary Ann (Dyer) Whitney now had a farm in Standish. Howard (25) and “Nellie” [Mary Ellen Whitney] (30) were living with their mother. [3]

Howard married Addie E. Rand sometime before 1887. They had two daughters: Edna Lynne Whitney and Floris M. Whitney. Howard passed away in 1896 in Standish, Maine. His date and place of death on Findagrave.com agrees with the information on his death record. [4] [5] He is buried in Dolloff Road Cemetery, Standish, Maine. [6]

On September 17, 1898, in Standish, Addie Whitney married Melville W. Rand. It was his first marriage and her second. Their marriage record (image available on Ancestry.com) gives the names of both Addie’s parents and Meliville’s parents. They appear to be two different families both with the surname Rand. Perhaps Melville was Addie’s cousin. [7]

Addie (age 37) and her two daughters Edna L. (age 13) and Floris M. (age 11) were living with new husband Melville (age 28) in Standish in 1900. [8] Floris M. Whitney passed away in 1909 at the age of 21 and is buried with her parents in Dolloff Road Cemetery, Standish, Maine. [9] Edna Lynne Whitney married Alonzo Elmer Burnham (also a Standish native). They lived in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine.

Melville passed away in 1915. He is buried with his parents in Dolloff Road Cemetery, Standish. [10]

In 1920 Addie (age 56) was living alone on a farm she owned on Oak Hill Road in Standish. [11] She was still living by herself in Standish in 1930 at age 66. [12]

Addie was still living in 1940. She was 76 years old, widowed, and living with daughter Edna (53) and her husband Alonzo (54) in Gorham. [13] Addie Rand passed away in 1960 at the age of 97. She is buried in Dolloff Road Cemetery, Standish, Maine. [14]

Edna and Alonzo passed away in 1963 and 1959, respectively. They are buried in Eastern Cemetery in Gorham, Maine. [15] [16]
