Josiah Whitney was born on September 11, 1731 in Stow, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. His parents were Richard Whitney and Hannah Whitcomb. [citation needed]

He married Sarah Farr on September 09, 1751. [1] [2]

Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Whitney marched on the alarm of 1775 in Colonel Asa Whitcomb's Regiment, and on the 25th of that month was engaged to hold the same rank under Colonel Asa Whitcomb in the Provincial Army where he served through the year. On Jan. 23, 1776, he was Colonel of the Second Worcester County Regiment, one of the six regiments raised to serve before Boston until April 1, 1776. April 10, 1776 he was Colonel of a regiment raised to fortify the town and harbor of Boston, and to be stationed at Boston under General Artemas Ward. The regiment was stationed at Camp Howe. On April 17, 1777 he was nominated to command one of two regiments destined for Rhode Island. In August 1777 he was Colonel of a regiment which marched on the alarm of Bennington. In the Rhode Island campaign in August 1778 he was Colonel of a Regiment comprising 630 rank and file in Brigadier General Titcomb's Brigade. In 1779 he was Colonel of the Second Worcester County Regiment in Brigadier General Jonathan Warner's Brigade. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Colonel Josiah Whitney commanded the 2nd Worcester MA Regiment. In 1776 he had total 616 men, with 555 fit for service, others on furlough or sick, one dead. In Cambridge MA 25 Feb 1776, 24 privates, 8 ensigns ...by 3 March 1776 only 503 were fit for service, 101 were sick, now only 23 privates. At 10 April 1776 Paul Revere was a Major in this regiment. Josiah Whitney died on January 24, 1806 at age 74 years, 4 months, and 13 days in Ashby.[12]

He is buried in West Cemetery in Ashby, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [12]
