He was a member of the consortium that purchased the well known firm Cobb & Co. in 1861 (it had been established in 1853).
William was married to Isabella Leeds, and in their latter years they lived in 106 Moulder Street in Orange. The hose was later owned by Cobb & Co booking office manager Edward Nathan, and was also used as a company stables and depot.
It is noted in "Walks, Tracks and Trails of New South Wales" by Derrick Stone, that The Royal Hotel in Sumner Street was once the booking office for Cobb & Co. It was there that William Franklin Whitney worked from as director and booking office manager. In Robertson Park the Whitney Fountain was built and dedicated to Whitney, with the employees of the Company having their wages docked by 5 pounds to pay for it.
William and his wife Isabelle are buried in the Orange Cemetery.
