Biography

BIRTH and ORIGIN
Based upon her marriage in 1775 Amy was probably born about 1752. She is believed to have been the daughter of Elisha Whitney of Mt. Hanley, Annapolis county, Nova Scotia. ^[1][2] Calnek refers to Mount Hanley as being in the Wilmot twp., Annapolis county. [Calnek, p.275] Original grantee's need to be researched.

Elisha Whitney is found in a list of 1793 Wilmot twp., Annapolis county inhabitants, hereafter referred to as "Memorialists", who filed a petition seeking government intervention regarding what they considered to be an environmental issue threatening the viability of their lands. ^[3] :

"Memorialists were informed that Jonathan Randell [probably Amy's brother-in-law] has applied for a grant of a certain tract of land lying between the lands granted to Daniel Durland and others and the common land of the settlement. This land is not fit for cultivation, and the memorialists request that the land be granted them for the whole community, "as cutting the timber on this land will expose the whole settlement to the violent blasts and injurious fogs of the Bay of Fundy."

Additional to this residency of her father is a 1794 Poll Tax record for Elisha Whitney in Wilmot township. ^[4] The Mt. Hanley community was settled about 1784 mostly by United Empire Loyalists and is thought to be named after Rev. Thomas Hanley Chipman, a leader of the surrounding Wilmot Township. The name is recorded in various sources as Handely.^[5] But, this doesn't mean Elisha Whitney was a U.E.L. as Amy's marriage to David Randall took place in 1775, Annapolis, which implies the Elisha Whitney family of Mt. Hanley arrived before the 1784 U.E.L. settlement. As with many of the other surrounding areas New England Planters were situated with later U.E.L. arrivals.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN
Amy Whitney married David Randall (David, Stephen, John) (who was) born 17 January 1748, Preston, Connecticut on November 23, 1775 in Annapolis county. ^{[1] [2]} According to sources Duncanson and Chute, David and Amy Randall settled in Aylesford. ^{[1] [6]} Their known children, all born at Aylesford, were:

1. John, b. Sep. 10, 1777; m. 1st Ruth Gates (James, Capt. Oldham, etc.), 1804, ^[1] and had James, William, Silas, Mary, Emily, Eliza, and Helen; m. 2nd Nancy Downey ^[1] ; m. 3rd Polly (Baker) Gloucher ^[1]
2. Lucy, b. July 28, 1779; d. at one month ^[1]
3. Jonathan, b. Aug. 15, 1781 ^[1] named for his uncle ; m. (prob. 2nd) Rachel Peirce (1801-1894) aka Pierce ; aft. b. of their first two children Charlotte & Charles, (twins), the family resided in Wade, Aroostook County, ME. ^[1]
4. William D., b. Oct 16, 1783 ^[1] ; m. Helen, dau. of Rev. T.H. Chipman ^[1] ; d. 18 Au 1870, Middleton, Annapolis, N.S. ; buried at Nictaux
5. George, b. Aug. 28, 1785; d. 1816 ^[1] believed to have drowned in a spring

DEATH
Amy (Whitney) Randall is believed to have died in 1830 at the age of seventy-eight years. David is believed to have died about a year later in 1831.
