Biography

1843 - 44 James was born on July 13 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He is the child of James Whitten and Margaret Gammon. [1]

1869 - James and Sarah J are said to have been married 31 years according to the [2]

1870 - James moved to Portland, Maine from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. [3]

1871 - James immigrated to USA. [4]

1898 - James' son Owen got married to Edith M. [5]

1900 - James is 55 yrs old, born in july 1844, in Canada. James' wife's name is Sarah J. born jan 1846, in Canada. They have been married 31 yrs and specify the year 1869. The children listed in their household: James B - son, age 29, born may 1871, single born in Canada (this contradicts info on the James Gammon's death certificate about his being 50 yrs in Portland, Maine, bringing him there in 1870 so why is son born in Canada? during a visit? Owen M - son, age 23, born Nov 1876, married for 2 years and born in Canada - same as brother above.... Ruth - Daughter, age 16, born in april 1884, single born in Maine Edith M - Daughter in law, age 21, born march 1879, married for 2 years, born in Maine. Edith Maud - grand daughter, age 1, born Sept 1898 in Maine. Dorothy H, grand daughter, born dec 1899 in Maine. [6]

1910 - James lives in Portland, Maine. He is a blacksmith. He is 66 yrs old, born in Canada. Says his father was born in England, his mother in Canada. James' wife is Jana? Jane? (Sarah Jane) She is 63 yrs old. born in Canada. Lewis ? Lenie ? E, - son in law, age 26, born in Maine, married Ruth - Daughter, age 25, born in Maine, married Edith M. Whitten, grand daughter, age 11 born in Maine. (from the census above, not sure but would think she is Edith's daughter, not Ruth's.[7]

1920 - James passed away on the 28h of April, at Portland, Maine where he had been a resident for 50 yrs. At the time of his death, he was 76 yrs, 9 most old. From this, we can approximate his birthday as July 1844. The cause of death was pneumonia. He was buried at the Forest City Cemetery at Portland, Maine.[8]

It says he is Male, White, and Married. His occupations was a Blacksmith.[9]

James' father is James Whitten, born in England. His father was a sea captain. His mother Margaret Gammon, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Although his status is that of married, the space for the name of a wife is blank. [10]
