Ted grew up at the family home on White Street in Lunenburg, Massachusetts.
After school and in the summer he worked at Page and Gleason for Al Cadrette, a friend of his father. Ted and his brother Ed both worked there doing odd jobs and helping to put together furniture.
Ted graduated from Lunenburg High School in May of 1966, and then in the Fall, began classes at Fitchburg State College.
At Fitchburg State he met Donna G. Howes, who he married in August of 1968. After getting married, they moved into their first apartment together on Blossom Street in Fitchburg.
In February of 1969, first son T.D. (Theodore David Whitten) was born at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg, MA.
Ted graduated from Fitchburg State College in June of 1970, with a teaching degree. Following graduation, he went to work at the Middle School in Lowell. However, he hated it, and remained only 1 year.
In or around September 1970, they moved to an apartment complex at 363 Hildreth Street in Lowell. Donna was pregnant with Chris during this time, and due in September.
In the Spring or Summer of 1971 they moved again, and lived briefly - for 6 or 8 months - with The Whittens at White Street in Lunenburg. This was so that they could save money to buy a house.
In September of 1971, Chris (Christian Isaac Whitten) was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lowell.
In early 1972 the house at #1 Elm Street, Townsend, MA was bought, and the family moved in. Chris was just a few months old, and not walking yet. T.D. was 3. The house was directly behind The Old Brick Store, which was owned and operated by Ted's father, Edward B. Whitten.
Ted worked as a volunteer fireman at the T.F.D., Townsend Fire Department.
Around '73-'74, Ted and Donna began getting very involved with the Unitarian Church in Ashby, and attending Spring Hill. Close friends at the time were Carol and Harry Stevenson.
Around April or May of 1976, Donna moved out with T.D. and Chris. Divorce was filed in May of 1978, and became final in late 1979.
In 1977, Ted began dating Vicki Lynn Kraus. Vicki later moved in with him at Elm Street in Townsend.
Sometime in 1979, Ted and Vicki moved to Ericson Road in Ashby, which had previously been the home of friends Carol and Harry Stevenson, and their son Ross.
In the Fall of 1980, Ted and Vicki bought and moved into their home on Foster Road, in Ashby. A few weeks later they were married at the Unitarian Church in Ashby.
Sometime in 1987, they bought their campground lot and Airstream trailer in Wells, Maine.
In 1992 they bought their condo at Village By The Sea in Wells, Maine. During the summer they would rent it out, but Ted lived here each winter, and worked in Maine. This continued until about 2001 when he became self-employed and could work from home.
Whitten Home Movies, 1969-71, Part 1
Whitten Home Movies, 1969-71, Part 2 These were taken by Ted. Parts 1 and 2 only add up to about 15 minutes of footage. You will notice some things are not in date order, because there were a few reels of footage, and the photo place that did the conversion didn't know their correct order.
T.D.'s 1989 Birthday Video from Dad & Chris - Part 1 Filmed January 1989. This video features appearances by numerous family and friends, some no longer with us.
VIDEO: Going Home - June 1989 - Part 1 This video is from a trip T.D. & Kim took back East in the June of 1989. The two clips together add up to about 2 hours. A get-together was held at Ted & Vicki’s house on Foster Road in Ashby, Mass for various friends and family, plus we attended Chris’s graduation from F.H.S., went to Maine, and visited Kim’s family too.
