Military Service

Military Service: Revolutionary War Soldier from South Carolina[5]

Charles Whitten Jr. was born on January 18, 1769 in south-west Virginia (either Botentourt or Amherst counties). He was the son of Charles Whitten Sr. and his wife Nancy (Smith) Whitten.

In 1784, after the American Revolution, he moved with his parents & siblings to north-central South Carolina, settling on land that his father bought there and that was later put in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. There, in 1786, he married Mary C. Whitten, whose maiden name may have been Reagan.[6]

The couple moved to the 96th District of South Carolina (later Anderson County) and had the following children:[7]

  1. George Whitten b: 22 JAN 1787 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  2. Un-named Daughter, b. ca. 1788 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  3. Un-named Daughter, b. ca. 1789 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  4. Mason Whitten b: 1791 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA, d. 1865 in Texas
  5. Joel Whitten b: 13 JAN 1792 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  6. Jonathan Whitten b: 1793 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA, d. 1872 Lauderdale Co., AL
  7. Cynthia A. Whitten b: ABT 1795 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  8. Charles Whitten III b: ABT 1800 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  9. Nicolas Whitten b: 2 FEB 1802 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA
  10. Un-named Daughter b. ca. 1803 in Ninety-six District, SC, USA

Charles Whitten Jr. left South Carolina in the early part of the 19th Century. He has been associated both with Lauderdale & Cherokee Counties in Alabama and Wayne County, Tennessee. By the 1830 Federal census he was living in Wayne Co., Tennessee. He also appears there on the 1840 Census but the 1850 Census lists his wife as "widow". Family genealogies state that he died around 1845 and is buried in Wayne County, Tennessee, USA.[8]

Whitten-522 and Whitten-730 appear to represent the same person because: The dates are approximate, but the children and place of death match up. The spouses are listed as Mary and Millicent Reagan, but the correct first spouse should be Millicent Reagan. These were sisters, daughters of James Reagan and Elizabeth Hayes. Mary was married to Charles' brother, John. Charles remarried after Millicent's death, and may have married a woman named Mary. Reference:Two Sons of Charles Whitten by William B. Moore, Jr, 2013, Heritage Publishing.
