Biography

Martha was born to William Whittingham and Mary Lawrence in Boston, in the year 1670. It has been documented in Saltonstall genealogy that her 3rd great grandfather was William Whittingham [1], the English Biblical scholar and John Calvin, the Reformer, being her third great uncle.

She was the second youngest child of Mary and William's five children. Her mother died a year after she was born, while giving birth to her brother, William, in 1671. Sadly, a year later her father died at the age of 27, in 1672. The children were left in the guardianship of their grand uncle, Rev. William Hubbard of Ipswich.

Her sister, Elizabeth, was married to Col. Samuel Appleton, and her other sister, Mary, was married to Gurdon Saltonstall, the Governor of the colony of Connecticut.

At the age of nineteen, Martha married Rev. John Rogers on Mar. 4, 1690, in Ipswich.

They had the following children.

  1. Rev John Rogers, b. 1692, d. 1773 in Eliot, Maine; m. Susan Whipple on Sep. 16, 1718. They had nine children.

  4. Capt William Rogers, b. 1699, d. 1750 in Maryland; m. Mary Caldwell in 1724.
  5. Rev Nathaniel Rogers, b. 1701, d. 1775 in Ipswich; m1. Mary Leverett; m2. Mary Burnham.
  6. Richard Rogers, b. 1703, d. 1742 in Ipswich; m. Mary Crumpton in 1720, they had 13 children.
  7. Elizabeth Rogers, b. 1705, d. 1706 in Ipswich; died in infancy.
  8. Elizabeth Rogers, b. 1707, d. 1782 in Exeter, New Hampshire; m. Francis Cogswell on Mar. 14, 1727 in Ipswich, they had nine children.

  10. Dr Samuel Rogers, MD, b. 1709, d. 1772 in Ipswich; m. Hannah Wise on Jun. 1, 1735 in Ipswich, they had eight children.

Martha survived her husband by 14 years, passing away at the age of 88 years, in Ipswich on Mar 9, 1759.
