Biography

Private Joseph Wiggins served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1862
Mustered out: 1864
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company F, 36th Alabama Infantry

Joseph Wiggins was born in Monroe County, Alabama on 16 Feb 1827. He was the son of Stephen Wiggins and Nancy Ann Thames. On the 13 of Feb 1850, Joseph married Harriet A. Fountain[1] (it is unclear how Harriet was related to the other Fountains that the Wiggins children married).

Upon their marriage, Joseph and Harriet lived with his widowed mother, but by 1860 they had settled on a tract of land adjacent to her where they raised their three children:[2][3]

  1. William Stephen Wiggins, b. 11 Jan 1851; d. 14 oct 1909;[4] m. abt. 1873, Johnnie Thomas Atkinson, daughter of John Thomas Atkinson and Martha Melinda Hendrix. Johnnie was William's step-sister.
  2. Georgianna Wiggins, b. abt. 1853; d. bef. 1889; m. abt. 1867, Francis Marion Massingill.
  3. Nancy Wiggins, b. abt. 1858.

Harriet died before 1873, when on 20th of November, Joseph married Martha (Hendrix) Atkinson.[1]

Joseph and Martha had the following children:[5][6]

  1. Lorenzo Wiggins, b. 2 Sep 1874; 19 Jan 1950; m. 1 Mar 1898, Mary Elizabeth Davison.
  2. Joseph Thomas Wiggins, b. 19 Nov 1876; d. 5 Jun 1905
  3. Ida Alabama Wiggins, b. 1879; d. 1903; m. 1900, John Dennis Forte.
  4. Margaret L. 'Maggie' Wiggins, b. 17 Fef 1882; d. 29 Aug 1961; m. Charles W. Fountain. (Another Wiggins-Fountain connection that needs further exploration).

In 1862, Joseph enlisted in Company F, 36th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was discharged in 1864 due to a physical disability, possibly Consumption. Joseph died in Monroe County on 6 Dec 1902. In 1907, his widow, Martha filed for pension. It is not clear if her application was initially accepted or denied, but in 1914, she was notified that she was ineligible for a pension because Joseph was not found on the roll of Company F, 36th Alabama Infantry. She responded with two affidavits sworn to before a Probate Judge by J. O. Archer and J. L. Marshall indicating that they had personally known and served with Joseph Wiggins in Company F.[7]
