Gilbert Wiggins was born in 1832, the son of Ebenezer Wiggins and Mehetable Briggs. He became a farmer at Waterborough in Queens County, New Brunswick.
He inherited all his father's real estate in 1853 and married Margaret Delilah Fairweather (1836-1923), daughter of Jedediah & Eleanor (White) Fairweather. The couple had 12 children: Laura A., Ebenezer, George Hedley W., Diadamia Orilla, Hiram Newton, Alice D. (Elsie), Lillian, Mary, William, Violet, Walter and Myrtle.
Gilbert gave his religion as Church of England (Anglican) in 1861, and had changed his affiliation to Wesleyan Methodist in 1871 and 1881. However, he is buried in Waterborough Baptist Cemetery, (the affiliation of his wife Margaret).
