Biography

Samantha Wiggins Word was born in Franklin Parish, Louisiana to Daniel K. Wiggins and Margaret Doyal, second wife of Daniel K. Wiggins. Samantha lost her mother within a year of her birth, and was raised by Daniel's third wife; Amy Randolph.

Samantha is shown on the 1850 Census of Franklin Parish, Louisiana[1], as "Samintha" with no age shown.

She married Thomas Marion Word on 4 June 1857 at Winnsboro, Franklin Parish, Louisiana[2]

She is shown on the 1860 census of Franklin Parish, LA[3] at age 22. She now has two children; Jeanette 2 yrs., and Charles 3 mo.

Her husband Thomas joined the Confederate cause in April of 1863, he was captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, and paroled on 7 July 1863.

She is shown on the 1870 census of Franklin Parish, LA, taken on the 23rd of July 1870, at age 32, with Jeanette, Charles, Nancy, Eleanor, Jennie, and Lucy[4]

She moved with Thomas to Aquilla, Hill County, Texas between 1870 and 1880.

Samantha is shown again on the 1880 Census of Hill County, Texas, taken on the 15/16th day of June of 1880.[5]

She died on 14 January 1881 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas. She is believed to be buried in Scots' Chapel Cemetery near Aquilla.
