Company B, Cocke's Regiment Arkansas Infantry (39th), US Civil War'
Adam Wiggins Junior was born July 14 1831 in North Carolina. He's buried at Harkey's Valley Cemetery, Yell County Arkansas, with numerous other Wiggins family members. Find A Grave Memorial # 134694301
Adam served as a Private in Company B. Cocke's (39th) Arkansas Infantry Regiment, in the Army of the Confederate States of America. WIGGINS, ADAM Pvt Enl 4 Jul 1862 at Dardanelle, AR Present through Feb 1864. [1]
The U.S. Censuses for 1860 and 1870 give his wife's name as Nancy, born about 1838 in Tennessee. Her death certificate says Nancy J. Wiggins' parents were from South Carolina. She died of chronic bronchitis in Feb 1880 and is also buried in Harkey's Valley Cemetery with other Wiggins family members.
Uncertain which of these land records in Yell County, Arkansas are Adam Wiggins Senior or Junior. One theory is that since Adam Wiggins Sr. had already recorded land records, they differentiated between the two men by providing Adam Wiggins Jr. with his middle initial "J". Not sure though. :
Alberto Westmoreland's role as he father is promising but perhaps additional sources should be located.... his birth in S.C. matches Nancy J. Wiggins' census records... his daughter Nancy J. Westmoreland's age and birth in Tennessee match Nancy J. Wiggins. In 1860, Alberto's family lived in Chickalah... Alberto's brother married Nancy J. Westmoreland's sister, certainly building a case!
Pertaining to the maiden name of Adam Wiggins Jr's first wife, Nancy J.;
Family Researcher Donna Turner provided the following notes:
Alberty moved with his parents to Catawa County, Alabama, in the summer of 1822 and then to Lauderdale County, Alabama, in the fall of 1822. It is believed that Alberty was in Wayne County, Tennessee, when the 1830 census was taken because there was a "Moses A. Westmoreland" listed there. By 1844 they were in Independence County, Arkansas, and a deed shows where Alberty and Mary sold her share of her father's estate there.
In the 1860 Yell County, Arkansas census, Chickalah Township, Alberty's occupation was listed as a Trader.
On December 25, 1871, Alberty borrowed $250 from Adam Wiggins. At that time, Alberty was listed as being "of Sebastian County". There was to be interest paid. In the place of interest, Adam had the right to use the land that Alberty had put up as collateral. This was the same 80 acres that Adam had homesteaded and had probably sold to Alberty. At any time within 3 years, if Alberty paid the $250, the contract would be void. Adam was obligated to pay the taxes on said land. This contract was signed and dated on March 27, 1872. Apparently, Alberty and his wife, Sarah F., both signed the agreement.
This incident was another clue (before I found proof) that Albeerty was Adam's father-in-law. He borrowed the money on Christmas Day, probably being together for the holiday as families do.
Alberty, his wife Sarah, and their three daughters, Lucinda, Mary, and Elen, were living in Marion, Sebastian county, Arkansas when the 1880 census was taken. He was 72 years old.
Maybe some of this is new to you and will help you in your research. This is not something I got off the internet. I searched court houses and libraries for documents for proof of this. It's good to find someone researching the Wiggins family.
Have a good day, Donna
