Biography

Birth

Mary Wight was born 18 August 1732 in Windham, Windham County, Connecticut Colony to parents Joshua Wight and Elizabeth Spowell.[1]

Marriage

She married Samuel Murdock Jr. on 15 March 1749/50 in Windham.<[1]

She and Samuel had the following children, all born in Windham: [2]

  1. Mary, born 4 or 24 January 1750/51,
  2. Hezekiah, born 10 May 1752,
  3. Joshua, born 27 September 1753; died 29 May 1761 "in the 8th year of his age",
  4. Samuel [3], born 11 February 1755,
  5. John, born 1 December 1756; died 25 April 1758,
  6. Submit, born 10 January 1759,
  7. John, born 23 October 1760,
  8. Joshua, born 9 October 1763
  9. Eli, born 9 June 1765,
  10. Dan, born 23 March 1767,
  11. Throop, born 15 October 1768,
  12. Elizabeth, born 15 June 1770,
  13. Eunice, born 26 February 1774.

Her husband, Samuel, had apparently moved ahead of his family, to Wilmington, Vermont in 1773; they joined him the following year. They moved to Rutland, Vermont in 1784, but by the time of the first United States Census in 1790, they were living in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont. No further record appears.[3]

Mary's date and place of death are not recorded.

Note regarding death

There are Find A Grave: Memorial #90950932 for Mary and Find A Grave: Memorial #90950814 for her husband Samuel, asserting burial in Bell Cemetery in Halifax. Her memorial recites her death date is unknown, and Samuel's that he died in 1769, obviously in error. There are no photos of gravestones. It would be helpful if photos of their gravestones could be had to confirm their burials. To that end, photos have been requested. This note will be revised if photos are furnished.

Find A Grave: Memorial #87752103 is linked to Mary's Find a Grave page for Samuel, b 1729, d 1812 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess, New York and buried in New York. This page has a source from Hale Cemetery stating he was formerly of Windham, age 83. This page seems more likely based on births of children.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

According to the Early American Marriages for Connecticut, page 44, Samuel Murdock married one Mary "Wright", not "Wight", on Mar 15 1750. I do not believe that Wright and Wight are one and the same. I used Ancestry's reference, an apparent photocopy of the original modern print.

Note that the Alvord genealogy identifies Mary, their first child, as the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Huntington) Murdock: https://archive.org/details/genealogyofdesce00alvo/page/108/mode/1up

Is the published information incorrect on that point? It does trigger some renewed investigation re. her maiden surname, and/or the possibility that she may have been married to ___ Huntington before she married Samuel Murdock.

The merger of Wright-44 into Wight-843 has been completed.

Unfortunately, the merge of Wight-691 into Wright-44 went the wrong way. Wight is the correct LNAB. Although she was unconnected, Mary Wight's father, Joshua Wight (and mother Elizabeth Spowell), and grandparents, and several greats are all in WikiTree as Wights. She is also listed as Wight in her birth and marriage entries in "Barbour". Further, The Wights. A record of Thomas Wight of Dedham and Medfield and of his descendants, 1635-1890 [1] provides additional evidence. I am going to create a new profile profile for Mary Wight, and then merge Wright-44 into it, so her LNAB agrees with her family line.

Wight-691 and Wright-44 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate
