This is the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) Project profile, a special account to look after Project Protected Profiles (PPPs) and orphaned profiles of 17th & 18th century members of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Friends and Quakers.

The current project leaders are Jim Angelo and Todd Stanton. David Wilson is a Project Co-ordinator.

Need some help from the Religious Society of Friends Project?

To make sure members of the Project can keep track of and watch over the projects PPPs and orphaned profiles, we have a project profile. This allows us to generate a project watchlist and feed to monitor changes on all these profiles.

Profiles protected (PPP) by the project are all adopted by the Religious Society of Friends project account. They may be historically significant Friends, or Friends who have a very large number of descendants or disputed parents. These profiles are protected to ensure that collaboration happens prior to changes being made to their family name or the connections to their parents. If you believe a profile ought to be protected by the Quakers Project, please either send a message to Jim Angelo and Todd Stanton or (if you are a member of the Group) post a message in the Project's Google Group.

As a member you can follow the feed of the Religious Society of Friends Project profile to see what work is being done on profiles in the project and to join in.

For project members

If you have completed a profile that is fully sourced and improved, it can be adopted by the Religious Society of Friends Project profile to reduce the number of profiles you are managing.

For all WikiTree members

If you are managing a lot of profiles for members of the Religious Society of Friends, but just don't have a lot of time to work on them or get them finished, or don't know where to start or find the proper sources for them, you can ask the project to adopt profiles. They will still be open for you to edit.

How to add the Project to a profile

Add to the Trusted List and Use Quakers Sticker

  1. Click the Privacy tab on these Friends profiles.
  2. In the Add to Trusted List section, add the project email:
    wikitree-quakers@googlegroups.com
  3. Click the Add this Person button link
  4. Add {{Quakers Sticker}} below the == Biography== heading. That will look like this:
Religious Society of Friends Project was a Friend (Quaker)

Add as a (co-)Manager and Use Project Box

  1. To add the Religious Society of Friends Project as manager: In the Trusted List section, select the link for wikitree-quakers@googlegroups.com to Add as Manager
  2. Add {{Quakers Project}} above the == Biography== heading. The Project Box looks like this:
    Quakers
Religious Society of Friends Project WikiTree was a Friend (Quaker).
    Join: Quakers Project
    Discuss: quakers

The Project Box should only appear on profiles where the Project is a co-manager.

This way we can collaborate to get them all finished and protected as needed. If you would like to monitor the Profile Alerts, see Project Watchlist Changes feed and/or request an invitation to join the GoogleGroup listed below.

I have many Quaker Family members who lived in Howard County, Indiana. There are 6 generations and extended Family there. Is there a list being kept or grouping I should be adding to these profiles to?

Hi Cheryl, There are several categories already for meetings and burial grounds at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Quakers_in_Indiana. If another category is needed please advise.

I just want to clarify my understanding, or lack there of, of this time period 1690 to 1740 when the ideals of the Quakers fluctuated a lot between groups of believers. Especially when and how it was appropriate to defend oneself. Captain Jacob Morrill dropped the title and barred others for their ownership of a weapon (John Ring). It seems a great deal of personal experimentation towards one's own believe system is happening during this time period and people move between different beliefs at a higher rate than normal. The other point is that I know that non members can be witnesses for a marriage but it should indicate at least an acceptance of the Quaker beliefs and therefore be worth tracking in the flow of data.

I am writing a book on my Hutchinson ancestors. This involves the Hampton Quakers especially the Morrill, Stanyan and Swett families along with many others. Salisbury/Amesbury/Hampton/Exeter etc. are where many lived but many were of Dover and into Maine. It amazes me at the strength of these people, not just the Quakers but those who refused to prosecute them. The best example I have is Jacob Morrill. He was a leader of the town of Salisbury, active in almost every facet of that community and yet in 1701 when he was obviously well known as a Quaker the town in general still wanted him. Yes, there were those religious leaders who fined him for preaching but he was a part of a community that held together despite the difference in religions. Many like him had households of mixed religious beliefs. Jacob was an active Quaker but his wife was a member of the second and then the first church of Salisbury. Although the Hutchinson family never choose a religious preference, they still married those of the Society of Friends. Fascinating history!

Lame, but how does the Quaker icon appear on a profile page? A check of “Changes” reveals no clues. I’d like to properly acknowledge and thank the person/b. . .for doing it. Thanks. D. Jenkins

When I find myself on a profile of someone and see there is documentation of them in a MM, I add the sticker as noted above and category for the meetings that have categories created. Which Changes are you not seeing on a profile?

Happy New Year!

Thank you. Likewise. I'm not seeing a documentation of who puts the sticker on the profile. Thought it would be included in "Changes." Just looking to give a shout-out. Could be missing something. Wouldn't be the first time. Thanks again.

Quakers are mentioned in a 1659 deposition given by Abraham Whittier in Southold, New York. “That Mr. Thomas Moore the elder sould both barrels of porck a board the shipp that they got as aforesaid to the Quakers for cloathes”. Vol. 1, p. 474 of Town Records [[1]]

I am excited to learn that there is a special section on Quakers. I will check out the project and see if I can find my ancestors. I have identified the founding fathers of Rhode Island as my ancestors, Portsmouth compact, and there were Quakers there of course, and will see what you have all posted. I have been working on Ancestry. thanks. more discoveries!!! super excited. Pamela Harter

. Or can we put comments on the Quakers Research Category page to let people know they can fix their own errors on their own Suggestions page? Or maybe send a Google email to the group? Or to all people following Quakers? Email could explain the difference between Project and non-Project accounts? Or...?
Can you please add me? Researching some of my Quaker family members.

Why isn't the email for this profile: [email address removed] I went to add this project to manage a profile and email is not associated. I then found it is [email address removed] so can we get the project page to agree?

I would like to add several profiles to the trusted list. Should I just add them or do you need to review them first?

Hi! Would the Quakers Project be interested in managing the profile for Jordan-192. Virginia Project is manager of his father's profile (see this G2G discussion).

Cheers, Liz
