Biography

Joanna Wilbor was born about 1668 in Sakonnet (Dartmouth), Plymouth Colony, to William Wilbore Sr. and Martha (Unknown) Wilbore. The lands of Old Dartmouth, purchased on behalf of the Plymouth Colony in 1652, included all or part of the present towns of Dartmouth, New Bedford, Westport, Fairhaven, and Acushnet, Massachusetts, and a strip of Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island.

She married Nathaniel Potter 3rd in Little Compton probably about 1701. In 1682, Sakonnet was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and renamed Little Compton.

Little Compton was not annexed to Rhode Island until 1747. All estate and land records prior to that year can be found in Taunton and New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, Probate Court and Registry of Deeds.

They had two children during their marriage; a son, William Potter, and a daughter, Mary (Potter) Brownell. Joanna died in 1759, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Birth & Marriage Dates

Research disclosed 3 different birthdates for a Joanna Wilbor of Little Compton, Rhode Island: 1668, November 7, 1698, and June 8, 1700[1]

Based upon the birthdate of her first child, William, in 1689, our Joanna's birth year would probably be 1668. Also, her marriage to Nathaniel Potter was probably before 1701.

Children

  1. William, born November 12, 1689, Dartmouth; married Mary Browning
  2. Mary, born in Dartmouth, died on April 12, 1722; married first to Isaac Wood; married secondly to Brownell[2][3]
