Additional Research Notes

From Genforum, posted by: David C. Cope, 15 Feb 2002
I did find a index listing for George Willcockson with land in Chester Co PA 1734. This is the oldest record I have found so far with the Willcockson spelling. Bill Scroggins in his report listed these names on the records of George Willcockson's will and estate 1739 Chester Co PA.
George Willcockson died before 25 Oct 1739 Chester Co PA; Elizabeth Willcockson was granted administration of his estate, against a bond in the amount of 160 pnds, secured by PHILLIP YARNALL and Joseph Pugh. Elizabeth Poell Willcockson died shortly thereafter because the Admistration of her estate occurred in 1740, PHILLIP YARNALL, admistrator for Elizabeth Wilcox, widow relict of George Wilcox., her late husband, who died intestate leaving several children to servive them. Particularly Mary Wilcox aged about 5 years, who need support, petitioned the court for Mary Wilcox to be bond out to John YARNALL until age 18.
Here is what I found-
This Phillip Yarnall was married to Mary Hoopes on 2-24-1720 Chester Co PA.
Bill goes on to list this: Phillip and John Yarnall provide a thread of circumstantial evidence connecting George & Elizabeth (Powell) Willcockson with the Boone family. After the death of Samuel Boone, brother of Squire Boone Sr, his widow Elizabeth (Cassel) Boone married Joseph YARNALL, son of Francis Yarnall & Hannah Baker on the 29th Day 7th Month 1748. The relationship between Phillip, John and Joseph YARNALL has not been determined, but they must have been kin.
[The Cope family is] found in Rowan Co NC on the Morgan Bryan Jr tax list with John and David Willcockson. Morgan Bryan Jr is an uncle of Rebecca Bryan who married Daniel Boone.
John Willcokson & Sarah Boone, William Grant & Elizabeth Boone, William Bryan & Mary Boone, Georg Forbis & Mary Bryan, Joseph Bryan & Aylee Linville, William Linville Jr are just some of the families listed on this tax list with William Cope and sons William, James and John Cope.

John Wilcoxson Senior of Cossall, father of George Wilcoxson is referred to in many people's family trees as being of Manley, Cheshire, born in 1667. This John is my direct ancestor - my 6x g. grandfather. His father was Arthur born 1626 in Frodsham Parish England (Manley lies in this parish) and his mother was Dorothy (surname not known). Arthur was a Quaker and his son John's birth was registered in a Quaker register. I have a copy of Arthur's will and have seen his Quaker burial place near Manley.

However according to my research, this John Wilcoxon of Manley is not the same person as John "Cossall" Wilcoxson/Wilcockson.

My ancestor John of Manley married Esther Davies on 6th May 1692 at Frodsham Parish. The parish records refer to him as John Wilcoxon of Manly in the parish of Frodsham. This John had 5 children recorded, Arthur, Dorothy, William, John and Ralph. My line is through Arthur. None of these children emigrated to America. He didn't have a son called George. John Wilcoxon of Manley died in Alvanley, a village close to Manley in Cheshire, UK in 1743. I have a record of his burial and an image of his will.

So it seems that the John who was the father of George who died in 1739 in Chester, Pennsylvania is someone else There are a lot of Wilcocksons and variant names in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire counties of the UK and I suspect he may be one of these. I would be most interested to hear from anyone on this.

Wilcoxson-577 and Wilcoxson-246 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same birth and death dates.

Wilcoxson-246 and Wilcoxson-358 appear to represent the same person because: All sources seem to point to these being the same person

Wilcoxson-222 and Willcockson-2 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same. I recommend a merge. The birth dates and locations don't match, but the family relationships do.

I would also write the other spelling of the name in Other Names.

Thanks,

Stormy
