Biography

Dorcas Lee Wilder was the daughter of William Wilder and Martha Jackson. She was born in Aug 1914 in Calvin, Kentucky. She was the second oldest child and oldest girl of eight children.

William worked as a motorman in the coal mines but with eight children to feed, Dorcas had to leave school as a sophomore in high school to help her mother with the younger siblings. She achieved her GED as a grandmother.

In Sept. 1933 she married Ernest Wilder, a sixth cousin. Ernest worked in the mines as her father did. The next May, she gave birth to a stillborn son who was named Jerry Wayne Wilder. The next May, she gave birth to her first daughter, Frieda Colleen, who was known as Colleen. Then came Wilma Jeweldine aka Jewell, Jean Darlene aka Darlene, and finally, Ernest Walter Wilder Jr. aka Sonny.

During WWII Dorcas lost her brother Paul who was stationed in the Philipines. Her other brothers who served made it home alive.

By 1948, the family was living in Lynch, Kentucky where Ernest was working for Black Star. They stayed there until Ernest had to leave the mines due to black lung. They then moved to Florence, Kentucky where Ernest got a job as a Pinkerton guard.

It was at this point that Dorcas decided that she needed to get a job. She got her GED and applied to work for a local department store called China Town. (The name was later changed to Van Leunan's after the owners.) Given her work ethic, her experience raising four children and two grandchildren, and her math talent, it didn't take long before she was managing the Men's Department. She ran the department until she retired.

Dorcas died due to a combination of congestive heart failure and cancer of the kidneys a year after Ernest died.

Notes

Dorcas was considered a fine singer in her day and it has been said that she cut a demo at one time. (I constantly check with family to see if anyone has a copy.)
After moving to Boone Co., KY in the late 50's she learned to drive and got a job at Van Leunan's, a local clothing store. She wasn't truthful about her age but it says something about her stamina and her looks that people never questioned the fact that she claimed to be 10 years younger. She retired from Van Leunan's after 20 years as manager of the men's department.
