James Monroe Wilder was born the 15th of May, 1861, in Shelby County, Alabama. James was the son of Daniel Wilder and Susan Jane Ticer Niven.

James was raised by his mother Susan, as his father, Daniel Wilder died in the Civil War, in January, 1865.

James married on the 23rd of November, 1885, Nancy Donna Dodson.
