John Wilder was born about 1784 in Virginia.[1] The names of John's parents and the exact place of his birth is unknown at present.

John and Sena/Cenia Jordan were married prior to 1805 in South Carolina.[2]

John is listed in the 1809 tax list of Madison County, Alabama, Mississippi Territory.

John is listed in the 1815-1817 census of Monroe County, Alabama Mississippi Territory. Monroe County, included all of 24 counties and parts of 11 counties. One of the counties included in Monroe County, was Shelby County, Alabama.[3]

John, his wife Sena and sons John and William are listed in the 1850 Federal Census in Shelby County, Alabama.[4]

John is listed in the 1850 Federal Census - Slave Schedules as the owner of one (1) female slave whose age is given as 35 years.[5]

John and Sena sold land in Shelby County, to Thomas Wilson on the 23rd of January 1852, with the deed being recorded on the 3rd of May 1852. The deed was signed by both John and Sena.[6]

John appears in the 1852, 1853 and 1855 Tax List for Shelby County, Alabama. In the 1855 tax list John is shown as owning the following land: SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 and SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 29, Township 19, Range 1 West, containing 80 acres; and N 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 29, Township 19, Range 1 West containing 80 acres. RESEARCHERS NOTES

Ancestry has over 183 family trees that incorrectly show John Wilder with the middle name of "Elvin". There are no recorded court records or deeds in Madison, Monroe or Shelby Counties, Alabama showing John Wilder with a middle name or using a middle initial. None of these Ancestry family trees list a source for this supposed middle name.

Ancestry has over 183+ family trees that show a photo that is listed as being of John and Sena Wilder. This photograph is actually a photograph of Rev. James David Martin and his wife Sena Elisabeth Wilder. I (Carolyn Wilder) own the original photograph which was taken in the 1880's. Sena Elisabeth Wilder is the daughter of Daniel Wilder and Susan Jane Ticer Niven, and a grand daughter of John Wilder and Sena Jordan Wilder.

Disputed Parents

John Wilder is erroneously listed as the son of [[Wilder-William Wilder in the 1969 third edition book "Wilder And Connecting (Especially Ware) Families In The Southeastern States", by William M. Wilder.

John Wilder would have been a small child about four (4) years of age in 1788, when William Wilder's father, Jonathan Wilder, died and left William Wilder who was a minor child, under guardianship. Based on the records located on Jonathan Wilder and his son's, in Lancaster County, Virginia and Sumter County, South Carolina, there is NO possibility that William Wilder, or any of the son's of Jonathan Wilder, are the father of John Wilder of Shelby County, Alabama.

NOTE: For those who have used or are considering using the book: "Wilder And Connecting (Especially Ware) Families In The Southeastern States", by William Murtha Wilder, as the proof of their Wilder or Ware lineage be advised that THIS BOOK IS A VERY UNRELIABLE SOURCE and should be used with great caution, and all sources should be check against the original documents.

George Wilder and Frances Ware are listed on numerous Ancestry family trees as the parents of John Wilder. There are no documents or sources to prove such a family relationship existed or that they even knew each other. George Wilder happens to appear in the same census in Shelby county, Alabama as John Wilder, along with other Wilder's, this does not prove a family relationship. There are no deed records in Shelby county, Alabama to show that George Wilder owned land, and there are no court records to show him serving jury duty, etc. George Wilder does not appear as a witness to any of the deeds that John Wilder signed. No records have been located to prove any family relationship between George Wilder and John Wilder. No estate records have been located for George Wilder, and no documents have been located to give the names of George Wilder's children.
