Biography

Martha was born about 1816 in Monroe county, Alabama, Mississippi Territory.[1] Martha is the daughter of John Wilder and Cenia Jordan.

Martha Wilder married Abraham Adams in Shelby County, Alabama. on the 17th February 1846.[2]

Martha, age 35, appears in the 1850 Federal Census in Shelby County, Alabama, in the household of her husband, Abram Adams.[3]

Martha, age 52, appears in the 1870 Federal Census in Shelby County, Alabama, in the household of her husband, Abram Adams.[4]

Martha's husband, Abraham Adams died intestate in Shelby County, Alabama, on the 18th July, 1870. Martha was the administrator of Abram's estate. Martha filed a petition in Shelby County, Alabama probate court on the 2nd of September, 1870, that gave a list of the heirs of Abram Adams. This petition reads in part as follows: "The State of Alabama Shelby County . . . The petition of Martha Adams admr of the Estate of Abram Adams late of said county deceased, Respectfully showeth unto your Honor, . . . the following and they alone are the heirs of said Estate to wit: Mary E. Nivens wife of J.B. Nivens & William F. Adams, both of full age and reside in said county and state, Olivia J. Adams, Sena Adams, John A. Adams, Daniel T. Adams, Eliza A. Adams, James J. Adams, all of the last six minors under 21 years of age and reside with their mother, Martha Adams, in said county of Shelby and State of Alabama and your petitioner said Martha Adams, . . ." [5]

Martha, age 64, appears in the 1880 Federal Census in Shelby County, Alabama. Martha is listed as a widow and the census taker noted that Martha was "crippled & useless to work". Martha's son's Daniel T, and James E. were living in the household, along with Izora Wilder, age 30 listed as housekeeper.[6]

Martha and Abram Adams were the parents of nine (9) children: Mary Elizabeth Adams Niven, Thomas Jefferson Adams, William F. Adams, Olivea Jane Adams Blackerby, Senia Ellen Adams Blackerby, John Abram Adams, Daniel Thomas Adams, Elizabeth Anne Adams Weldon, and James E. Adams.

Martha died in 1883, and is buried at the Old Quinn Burying Ground, Chelsea, Shelby County, Alabama.[7]
