Biography

Mary Wilder was born the 5th of February, 1825 in Shelby County, Alabama. Mary is the daughter of John Wilder and Cenia Jordan.

Mary married Ervin C. Horton on the 16th of February, 1848, in Shelby County, Alabama.[1]

Mary appears in the 1850 Federal census in the household of her husband Irvin (also spelled Ervin) Horton, and with her son, John age 2. Mary and Irvin are listed in the census in the household next to Mary's parents, John and Cenia Wilder.[2]

Mary appears in the 1870 Federal census in the household of her husband Ervin, in Lee county, Mississippi, along with son's, Andrew L, age15; and Thos. J., age 14.[3]

Mary died about 1873, in Lee County, Mississippi. Mary's tombstone gives her date of death as the 5th of September, 1878. The 1878 year of death is incorrect as Ervin C. Horton married his second wife on the 22nd of January, 1874. Mary and Ervin's tombstone's are identical in size and style, and given the 18 year time span between when Mary and Ervin died, it is likely that Mary's tombstone was purchased at the same time Ervin's tombstone was purchased and the individual purchasing the stone forgot the exact year of Mary's death. Based on these unknowns Mary's date of death is given in this record as the 5th of September 1873.[4]

NOTE: on the Find A Grave site showing Mary's tombstone, it list William Horton, born 1886 as being a son of Mary's, this is incorrect as Mary was deceased by 1886. William is a son of Ervin C. Horton and his second wife Cynthia J. Brooke.
