Kerney married in Johnston Co., North Carolina, on the 31st of December, 1857, Mary Ann Elizabeth Strickland. The marriage bond only list her name as "Elizabeth". The marriage bond was issued on the 29th of December, 1857. The bondsman was Henry Ferrell, and the witness was Thos. T. Hill.
Kerney appears in the 1860 Federal Census in Johnston Co., North Carolina. Kerney's wife's name is given as Mary. Kerney names his wife as Polly Ann in his will, and her name is listed as Elizabeth on the marriage bond. This would make her given name was Mary Ann Elizabeth Strickland, and she used the nickname "Polly" which is a common nickname for Mary.
Kerney enlisted on 16 July, 1862 in Wake Co., North Carolina, as a Private in Co. H, 3rd Regiment North Carolina Artillery.

Kerney made his will in Johnston Co., North Carolina on the 18th of February, 1887. Kerney's will reads in part: "State of North Carolina, Johnston County - I Kerney Wilder of the aforesaid county and state . . . I give and devise to my beloved wife Polly Ann Wilder . . . after the death of my beloved wife Polly A. Wilder my desires is that all of the personal property then remaining be sold and the proceeds thereof be equally didvided between MY SIX CHILDREN to wit: Elizabeth Tippett, Cassanda M. Tippett, Elisa J. Albu, Virginia F. Wilder, Sarah F. Wilder and Milly A. Wilder. . . that my land be equally divided between the above named heirs whether platted or sold and divided as they may agsree . . . I hereby constitute and appoint my trusty friend J. R. Morris my lawful Executor to all interests and purposes to execute this my last will and testament . . . whereof I the said Kerney Wilder do hereunto sit my hand and seal this the 18th dy of February, 1887 Kerney Wilder his X mark. Witnesses Bennett Strickland John W. Corbett."
Kerney died in Johnston Co., North Carolina on the 8th day of March, 1887.
