Biography

Mathew Wilder Sr. was born before 1755, in North Carolina, based on his age being 45 and over in the 1800 Federal Census of Johnston Co., North Carolina.

Mathew married Catherine Lee prior to 1790, in North Carolina.

Mathew and Catherine were the parents of the following children named in Mathew's will: Elisabeth Wilder; Nancy Wilder; Catherine Wilder; Jane Wilder; William Wilder; Mathew Wilder; Samuel Wilder, John Wilder; Irwin Wilder; David Wilder; and Fancy Wilder.

Mathew's will reads in part as follows: ". . . I Mathew Wilder Sr of the State of North Carolina & Johnston county do constitute this my last will and testament . . . I give and bequeath to my [unreadable] Elisabeth Wilder upon her giving [unreadable] by Elisabeth Lee her grandmother . . . I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Wilder . . . one negro girl named Hannah and one feather bed and furniture sixteen silver dollars . . . I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherin Wilder . . . one negro girl named Jane and one feather bed and furniture and sixteen silver dollars . . . I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Wilder . . . one negro girl named Mary and one feather bed and furniture and sixteen silver dollars. . . I give and bequeath unto my son William Wilder . . . four hundred and ninety acres of land more or less whereon I now live . . .if my son William Wilder dies without a lawful heir or before he come to the age of twenty one years my will is that my son Mathew Wilder shall have the land given to him . . . I give and bequeath unto my son Mathew Wilder . . . negro girl named Lucy and one horse bridel and saddle to be valued to one hundred dollars . . . lend unto my wife Cathren Wilder during her natural life or widowhood . . .give and bequeth unto ten of my children that the end of my wifes widowhood all my estate which is lent to her to be equally divided between them whose names here follows to wit Samuel, John, Irwin, David, Fancy, Elisabeth, Nancy, Cathren, Jane and Mathew Wilder. [NOTE: William is the only child previously mentioned in the will that is missing from this list] . . . and do constitute and ordain Samuel Wilder jr and John Wilder my sons and Cathren Wilder my wife Executors to this my last will and testament. In witness where of I have here unto set my hand and seal this 9th day of October 1805. Mathew Wilder his M mark. Present when signed George Gully and Thomas Oneal
