William Franklin Wilder was born 25 April 1837 in Forsyth, Monroe county, Georgia.[1] William was the son of Larkin Wilder and Nancy Dewberry. [2]
William appears in the 1850 Federal census in Cherokee county, Alabama in the household of his parents. Larkin Wilder's household appears as follows: Larkin age 51, born GA; Nancy age 48, born GA; Elizabeth age 17, born GA; James M. age 16, born GA; William F. age 14, born GA; David T. age 12, born GA; and Jiles S. age 10, born GA.[3]
William, age 23, appears in the 1860 Federal census in Cherokee county, Alabama in the household of George T. Clifton.[4]
William enlisted in the Confederate army in 1862 at Blount county, Alabama. William served as a private in Company A, 28th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.[5]
William married Caroline W. Barry on the 1st of May 1862 in Blount county, Alabama.[6]
William appears in the 1870 Federal census in Blount county, Alabama. William's household appears as follows: (Note: census taker used initials) W.F. age 30, occupation farmer; C.W. age 25; son J.D. age 4; and daughter L.R. age 3 months.[7]
William appears in the 1880 Federal census in Blount county, Alabama. William's household appears as follows: Franklin age 43, occupation farmer; Caroline age 40; John D. age 13; Roanna age 10; James age 7; William age 5; Sarah age 3; and Stacia age 9 months.[8]
William's wife Caroline died about 1885. William married his second wife, Narcissa Jane McElvana on the 18th of July 1886 in Blount county, Alabama.[9]
William appears in the 1900 Federal census in Blount county, Alabama. William's household appears as follows: William F. age 63, occupation farmer; Narcissin J. age 54; Narcissa is listed as the mother of one child with no children living; and Isabella age 21.[10]
William appears in the 1910 Federal census in Blount county, Alabama. William's household appears as follows: William F. age 73 and Jane N. age 65.[11]
William appears in the 1920 Federal census in Blount county, Alabama. William's household appears as follows: William F. age 82; and Narcissa J. age 73.[12]
William, age 74, appears in the Alabama census of Confederate Veterans taken in 1921.[13]
William died the 21st of April 1923 in Blount county, Alabama.[14] William was buried in the Hood Cemetery, Blunt county, Alabama.[15]
Notice of William's death appeared in The Southern Democrat as follows:
"Frank Wilder Dead - Mr. Frank Wilder, aged about 86 years, died at the home of his son, J.M. Wilder at Locust Fork ast Sunday. Uncle Frank, as he was called, had been in feeble health for several months and his death was no surprise. He was a Confederate soldier, a man with many friends and was well known in all parts of Blount county, a good citizen and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow, one son, Monroe Wilder, of Locust Fork; two daughters, Mrs. J.W. Hendricks, of Purvis, Miss. and Mrs. H.C. Cornelius, of Ketona. His remains were carried to his old home, Royal, and interred in Hood's cemetery."[16]
