Biography

Francis Wilder was born about or before 1650, in Virginia. Francis is the son of Edward Wilder and his wife Ann Maiden name unknown.

Deed Bk. 4, p. 248a. (30 November 1686) "I Francis Wilder assigne over all my right title & interest of this bill of sale to Adam Macon, as full, etc., as it was assigned to me by my father Edward Wilder, all was providing that if Thomas Macon brother to the aforesaid Adam Macon should be living and come for the sd land which is acknowledged to me by sd Adam Macon, then it is agreed that the sd Adam to acknowledge this land to me again. (s) Francis ("F") Wilder Wits: Arthur Moseley, Benj. Hargrave The above assignment hath relation to and was endorsed on a conveyance by Edward Wilder to the sd Francis Wilder and recorded 11 May 1682. Acknowledged in Court 30 [__?__] 1686 by Francis Wilder & his wife.[1]

Francis Wilder appears in the Norfolk county, Virginia Quit Rent Rolls list for 1704. Francis is taxed for 100 acres.[2]

Norfolk County, Virginia, 1711. Deed Bk. 9, pp. 72-74 (7 May 1711) Indenture dated 7 May 1711. Francis Wilder, boatright, & Sarah his wife of Tanners Creek, Norfolk County to Matthew Catherine, mariner, of the same place . . . signed Francis (X) Wilder; Sarah (S) Wilder. Wits: John Williamson, Abraham (X) Patton, William Simons, James Toomoth. Acknowledged in Court 20 July 1711 by Francis Wilder & Sarah his wife being first privately examined acknowledged and relinquished her right of Dower.[3]

Francis' married the widow Mary Voss sometime before 1715. Mary Voss Wilder's first husband, Israel Voss, died in Norfolk County, Virginia in 1714.[4] Francis and Mary were defendants in a suit brought by Lemuel Wilson. The court record reads as follows: "Norfolk County, Virginia, Court July, 1715 . . . Order is granted Lem'l Wilson against Francis Wilder and Mary his wife adm'x with will anxt of Capt Israel Voss Dec'd for the same of two hundred & ? eight pounds of Tobacco appearing due by the Plts: oath & ordered they pay the same out of the Estate of Capt. Israel Voss Dec'd with cash . . ."[5]

Francis Wilder made his will on the 27th February, 1722/3, and proved on the 19th February, 1723/4. Francis' will reads as follows: "In the name of God Amen the Twenty Seventh Day of February in the year of our Lord God 1722/3 I Francis Wilder of Norfolk County in Virginia being weak in Body but of perfect mind & memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament - first I give and recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it me hoping at the general resurrection to reside the same again; and my body to its Mother Earth to be decently buried at the diseration of my executors hereafter named and as touching my worldly good wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and bequeath as followeth ---- Item I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Wilder the plantation where he now dwelleth and all the land on the West side of the Reedy Branch to him and my said son and the heirs lawfully bequeathen of his body for ever - - I likewise give to my said son Samuel all my working cloths and my silver headed cane - - - Item I give and bequeath unto my son Jeremiah Wilder my plantation where I now dwell with all my land on the Eastern most side of the Reedy Branch together with all my houses and orchards thereon to him and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body for ever - - Item I give to my Daughter Sarah Wilder one Leather Trunk and one looking glass and one cow & calf and the ? and the feather bed she useth to lye upon with what belongs with ? two pewter dishes and one pewter bason & three of pewter plates and one small iron pot of about two gallons and all the dunghill fowles of her raising and my will is that she may live in my house with her brother until she be married ----Item I give to my son Michael Wilder my gun and all my working tools that he knoweth how to use and all the crop that shall be upon or of the plantation growing or housed of my said sons making and one cow & calf with its ? - - -- Item I given to my son in law Thomas Voss one small chest with lock and key that was his mothers and one great Bible if he learns to read --- my will is that the remaining part of my Estate be equally divided among all my children in such proportion that they which had the least may be made equal with the rest in moveable except one pitch pot which I give to my son Jeremiah and I do constitute and appoint my sons Samuel & Jeremiah Wilder my Executors of this my last will and testament ratifing and conferming this and no other - In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal Signum Francis F Wilder Signum John Pearce, Henry H Mason James Toomoth Poad J T?? At a Court held ? 1723/4 The above will was presented in Court by John Wilder . . . named who made oath thereto according to law & being proved by the oaths of James Toomoth, Henry Mason is on his motion admitted to record . . ."[6]

Francis Wilder died in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia after 27 February, 1722/3 and before 19 February, 1723/4.

Francis Wilder 1650 Lower Norfolk VA

father Edward Wilder Wife Marie Dickens Francis Wilder's wife is unknown at this writing. Does anyone know who married Francis Wilder. A different Edward Wilder married Anne - he lived in Hingham, MA. Francis was not married to Marie Dickens - his father was.
