Biography

Edward Wilder was born about 1629, based on the age Edward gave in a deposition in 1659.[1] Edward was very likely born in England. It is believed, but not confirmed, that Edward Wilder is possibly a son of John of Combe Hants, but there is no proof.

Edward Wilder is in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia prior to 1649: court case dated 19 December 1649 "Edward Wilder deft: arrested to ye Court by Mr. Lemuel Mason & appeareth not . . . to ye next Court . . ."[2]

Edward Wilder received 200 acres of land in Lower Norfolk county, Virginia on the 9th of March 1652. [3]

Edward Wilder married before 1655, Ann (Anne) maiden name unknown UNKNOWN Anne.

Edward Wilder of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, planter, to Abraham Elliott; for a "certain sum of tobacco," half of a tract of land being 500 acres lying & being towards the head of Daniell Tanners Creek which said Wilder bought of Jasper Hougkinson bearing date 15th May 1655 as appears in records of aforesaid county; this conveyance being one half next adjoining the land of Simond Peters according to the bounds of the Original Patent dated 16th April 1655 ---- In witness whereof I have sett my hand & seal this 26th day of May 1661 - (s) Edward Wilder Wits: Tho: Brudge, Nicholas (X) Mason[4]

Edward Wilder of Elizabeth River parish, Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, house carpenter - "by virtue of a commission granted me by the County of Lower Norfolk on the estate of Edward Bragger dec'd who married the Relict of Daniell Macoy of aforesaid parish & county, I am possessed of a certain quantity of wood land ground belonging to Thomas Macoy, one of the sd Daniell Macoy's orphants who is a present out of the country & also a small parcel of cleared land ground by a conveyance this day made unto me in behalf of sd Thomas Macoy by Samuell Roberts - all which land is nigh the head of Daniell Tanners Creek - NOW KNOW YE that I the said Edward Wilder, for the better improvement of the said land have "farm lett" by these presents unto my son Francis Wilder all the aforesaid land with all houses, orchards, gardens fences, etc... to have & to hold unto him the sd Francis Wilder as his own proper Estate of Inheritance from the day of the date hereof until the said Thomas Macoy shal! l either come or send to take the same out of my hands; --------it is the true intent that the sd Francis Wilder shall keep the houses now built on the said land tenantable, repair & keep the fences about the orchards & other enclosures and at the expiration of this lease to leave them in likewise condition ------ signed & sealed the 10th day of May 1682. (s) Edward Wilder Anne (X) Wilder Wits: Wm. Porten, Wm. Piper Acknowledged in Court 11th May 1682.[5]

Edward and Ann Wilder were the parents of the following known children: Henry Wilder, Michael Wilder, Francis Wilder, and Anne Wilder.

Edward Wilder made his last will in 1686. The will names his son Michael and wife Ann as Executors. The will was proved in court in Norfolk County, Virginia. on 15 September, 1687. "In the name of god amen I Edward Wilder being weak of body Butt of good & perfect memory doth make this my last will & Testament - bequeath my soul to god that gave it me First I make my Deare and loving sonne Mikell Wilder and my Deare wife Ann Wilder Executors of my Estate . . ."[6]

The inventory of Edward Wilder, was dated 14 July 1689, and was signed by Mikell (Michael) Wilder and Ann Wilder, and was sworn to in court on 15 July, 1689.[7]

Some individuals have listed Edward Wilder as marrying in 1640 in England, Marie Dickens. The Edward Wilder who married a woman named Marie in England was born about 1614. Edward Wilder who lived in Norfolk County, Virginia was born about 1629, based on the age found in: Ages of Lower Norfolk County People By Charles F. McIntosh - Abstracted from Depositions found in Books A, B, C and D (1637-1665) in the Norfolk County Clerk's Office. The ages in almost all instances are followed by the words "thereabouts." - Edward Wilder aged 30 years 1659. No documentation has been provided proving that the Edward Wilder, born about 1614, in England and marrying Marie in 1640, is the same Edward Wilder living in Virginia in 1649.
