Biography

Thomas Wilder Sr. married Martha Higgs, born England, died 20 Apr 1652, Hingham, MA. Thomas died 1634, Shiplake, England. Shiplake is on the west bank of the Thames, 3 miles from Henley, Oxfordshire.

After Thomas's death, Martha is thought to have sent 3 of her children to America with friends. Then in the spring of 1638, she and daughter Mary sailed from Southampton on the "Confidence." The passenger list shows "Martha Wilder, Shiplocke, Oxfordshire, Spinster and Mary Wilder, her daughter."

They arrived at Hingham in Nov 1638 and Martha had grants of lots in this town for house planting, pasture and meadow. Martha: Some sources, unproven, state that Thomas and Martha had nine children in the following order: Alice, John, Thomas Jr, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, Isaac, Matthew and Abraham. If so, the fate and descendants of the added members is unknown.

Children

  1. i John Wilder b. ca 1616, Shiplake, Oxford, England, d. 1688. John is believed to have stayed in England.
  2. ii Elizabeth Wilder b. 1620-1, England, d. 1688. She is believed to have come to America before 1638. She married Thomas Ensign of Marshfield, MA. 17 Jan 1639 at Hingham, MA. They had three children.
  3. iii Edward Wilder b. 1623, England, d. 28 Oct 1690, MA. Believed to have come to America before his mother. Probably with Thomas and Elizabeth. Made a freeman in 1644. He married Elizabeth Eames in 1652 and had eleven children. Elizabeth was daughter of Anthony Eames of Medfield.
  4. iv Mary Wilder b. 1625, England, d. 23 Dec 1658, MA. Came with her mother to America. She lived at Hingham and later in Watertown, MA. She married Joseph Underwood (born in England) and they had seven children.
DNA studies show that Thomas Wilder of Charleston MA was not a son of this couple. Donald E Hansen and Michael F Hansen, "DNA Resolves a Wilder Ancestral Mystery," American Ancestors Magazine, Vol. 11.2:46ff.

Wilder-1529 and Wilder-103 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates
Wilder-638 and Wilder-103 appear to represent the same person because: Wilder-638 has no connections other than his marriage to Martha Higgs. If there is a different Thomas Wilder who fits the note re: DNA on Wilder-638, then perhaps it should be disconnected from Martha Higgs; otherwise, it seems clear that these two are duplicates and should be merged.

Thanks!
