Nathaniel was about 18 years of age or younger when his father Michael Wilder died in November 1793. Nathaniel was placed under the guardianship of his older brother John Wilder. The guardianship record reads in part as follows: "State of North Carolina, Know all Men by these presents, . . . dated this 11 day of March 1794. Whereas the above bounden John Wilder hath been this day, by the worshipful court of said county appointed guardian to Nathaniel Wilder orphan of Michael Wilder deceased: . . . and that he will deliver up to the said Nathaniel Wilder orphan, as aforesaid, when he shall attain lawful age, all such estate as he ought of right to be possessed of, or sooner if required, agreeable to the true intent and meaning of the act of the General Assembly in such case made and provided; then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. [signed] John Wilder, Charlton Simons Signed, Sealed and Delivered in the Presence of Jos. Blount"[1]
The division of slaves in the estate of Thomas Ward, reads in part as follows: "Agreeable to an order of court appointing us to divide certain negros agreeable to the last will of Thomas Ward deceased between the children of Penelope McNidar and the children of Rachel Wilder . . . To Rachel Wilders children viz: Willis, John, Francis, Nathaniel and Michael . . . Wittness our hand this 9th day of April 1784 . . ."[2]
Nathaniel purchased from his brother Michael Wilder land that had formerly belonged to Nathaniel's father, Michael Wilder and had been set aside as the dower for Michael Wilder's widow, Hannah. The deed reads in part as follows: "This Indenture made and entered into this Sixth day of May, one thousand eight hundred and three, Between Michael Wilder of the State of North Carolina Chowan County of the one part and Nathaniel Wilder of the State and County aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Michael, hath this day bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell to the said Nathaniel all my right and title claim and demand that I lately purchased of James Saunders and wife Hannah in a tract of land lying in the said County adjoining Stephen Cabarrus Esquire and said Nathaniel and being the said Hannahs Dower in the land of Michael Wilder Deceased, in that place, Together with every appurtenance thereunto belonging to the said premises for the sum of Two hundred and Fifty Dollars to me in hand paid by the said Nathaniel, the sum I do hereby acknowledge the right and title and interest on me as above mentioned will warrant and defend to the said Nathaniel to his heirs and assigns, In Witness my hand and seal this Sixth day of May 1803. [signed] Michael Wilder Sealed and delivered in the presence } Jn (John) Wilder State of North Carolina Chowan County Court June Term 1803, This certifys that the within Deed was exhibited in open Court and acknowledged by the said Michael Wilder and ordered to be Registered. Registered 24 December 1803."[3]
Nathaniel sold 100 acres of land to his brother John Wilder in a deed dated the 16th of May 1803. The deed reads in part as follows: "This Indenture made this 16th day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and three Nathaniel Wilder on the one part, and John Wilder of the other part both of the County of Chowan and state of North Carolina. Witnesseth that the said Nathaniel Wilder for and inconsideration of the sum of Two hundred pounds current money of the state to him in hand paid by John Wilder the receipt whereof acknowledged . . . do grant bargain and confirm to the said John Wilder his heirs and assigns a tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Chowan and state aforesaid containing by estimation one hundred acres . . . In Witness whereof I the said Nathaniel have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16 day of May 1803 [signed]Nathaniel Wilder Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of Michael Wilder State of North Carolina Chowan County Court June Term 1803 This certifys that the within Deed was exhibited in Open Court and proved by the acknowledged of the said Nathaniel Wilder and ordered to be Registered. Registered 24 December 1803"[4]
Nathaniel married Elizabeth Williamson on the 9th of December, 1807, in Chowan county, North Carolina.[5]
Nathaniel appears in the 1810 Federal census in Chowan County, North Carolina. Nathaniel's household is listed as follows: 1 male age 26 thru 44; 1 female age under 10; 1 female age 16 thru 25; and 7 slaves.[6]
Nathaniel served as a private in the company of Chowan Militia commanded by Lieut. Hopkins in the War of 1812.[7]
Nathaniel appears in the 1820 Federal census in Chowan County, North Carolina. Nathaniel's household appears as follows: 1 male under age 10; 1 male age 26 thru 44; 2 females under age 10; 1 female age 16 thru 25; 1 female age 26 thru 44; and 10 slaves.[8]
Nathaniel appears in the 1830 Federal census in Chowan County, North Carolina. Nathaniel's household appears as follows: 1 male age 10 thru 14; 1 male age 20 thru 29; 1 male age 50 thru 59; 1 female age 5 thru 9; 1 female age 10 thru 14; 1 female age 15 thru 19; 1 female age 30 thru 39; and 14 slaves.[9]
Nathaniel died intestate in 1833 in Chowan County, North Carolina. Nathaniel's widow, Elizabeth filed the following with the court in Chowan County, North Carolina: "To The Worshipful County Court of Chowan This is to certify that I have relinquished my right of administration on my Dec'd husbands estate to William Bullock given under my hand this 15th December 1833 [signed] Elizab Wilder."[10]
The following petition filed with the Court of Chowan County, North Carolina list the following heirs of Nathaniel Wilder, deceased: "State of North Carolina Chowan County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Nov. Term 1835 . . . The petition of Charles C. Taber & wife Mary of Henry Wilder, Jane Wilder, and Penealope Wilder infants of tender years by Charles C. Taber their guardian sheweth your worships that they are the only heirs at law of Nathaniel Wilder who departed this life in the year 1833 intestate . . . that the said C. C. Taber intermarried with the said Mary is one of the heirs at law of the said Nathaniel . . ." [11]
