NOTES

Jonathan Wilder is not the son of Jonathan Wilder of Lancaster County, Virginia based on the following:

  • If Jonathan Wilder's date of birth of 21 June 1768, is correct it would mean he would be a son of Jonathan Wilder and his first wife Mary James. However, we know that James Wilder, son of Jonathan Wilder and Mary James did not name a brother Jonathan Wilder in his will, and Jonathan Wilder also did not name a son "Jonathan" in his will in 1788.
  • Spencer Wilder, the son of Jonathan Wilder and his first wife Mary James filed suit in Chancery Court Lancaster Co., Virginia against the executors of Jonathan Wilder's estate (Wilder vs Wilder's Executors 1789-006). This suit states in part: ". . . Humbly complaining showeth unto your worships Spencer Wilder the only surviving child of Jonathan Wilder late of this county dec'd by his first wife Mary the Daughter of Thomas James dec'd by his first wife . . .that your orator showeth that his mother Mary died in the lifetime of her mother in law Joan James, widow of the aforesaid Thomas, leaving three children to wit: James, your orator and Thomas that James and Thomas are also since dec'd without issue . . . Your orator also showeth that sometime on or about the 22 Nov 1775 your orators father Jonathan was possessed of sundary slaves and personal estate belonging to the estate of your orator's grandfather Thos. James, and which he only could claim as natural guardian to his children by his dec'd first wife Mary . . ."
  • Spencer Wilder's suit shows that Jonathan Wilder and his first wife Mary James had only three children who lived to adulthood, those being sons: Thomas Wilder, James Wilder, and Spencer Wilder, and that Thomas and James Wilder were both deceased and without issue. Any living children of Jonathan Wilder and Mary James would have been required to be listed in Spencer's lawsuit as they would have been entitled to their interest in the personal estate left to Mary James' children by their grandfather, Thomas James. Jonathan Wilder (Jr) is not mentioned in any of the court records for Jonathan Wilder or the lawsuit regarding his estate.

Jonathan Wilder had the following children by his second marriage to Frances (maiden name unknown): Frances Wilder, Mary J. Wilder, William Wilder, John Wilder and Vincent Wilder.
