Biography

Nathaniel Wilder was born in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 3 November 1655. He was the son of Thomas Wilder and Anna (Unknown) Wilder. [1]

Nathaniel married Mary Sawyer in Lancaster on 24 January 1673/4.[2] [3]

He was an innkeeper in Lancaster for over 25 years.

Nathaniel, along with several others, was tried for the murder of some Indian women and children in 1676. He was released. Four others were hanged.[4]

Nathaniel died in Lancaster during a Native American raid on 31 July 1704 during Queen Anne's War. The date is given in his estate probate file.[5] In the published Lancaster vital records, Henry Nourse, the compiler and editor, inserted a section called "Killed in Assault by French and Indians, July 31, 1704."[6] The list includes "Lieutenant Nathaniel Wilder, aged fifty-four years." No source is provided and is therefore unreliable as to his age, especially given Nathaniel's 1655 birth record. This may be the source for many other references to his death that change his birth date to 3 November 1650.

William Richard Cutter, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, vol. 4 (New York: 1915), 1980, erroneously gives his birth year as 1650. This may have been the origin of this mistake and has been repeated many times since. Cutter likely chose 1650 based on the statement in The Birth, Marriage, and Death Register, Church Records and Epitaphs of Lancaster, Massachusetts. 1643-1850, compiled by Henry Nourse, that he was 54 when he died. Nourse gives no specific source for this information. The mistaken date of 1 Nov. 1650 has been often repeated on the internet.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:
