Mary Wilhoit was born in what is now Culpeper, Virginia in about 1740 (the county of Culpeper was founded in 1749 from Orange County; the town of Culpeper was founded in 1759). She was the daughter of Adam Willheit and Catherine Broyles. She married William Carpenter in 1756 in Culpeper, Virginia, the son of John Carpenter and Anna Barbara Kerker.
