Thomas and Polly named their farm the Pine Grove Shorthorn Stock Farm. He was a fine stock raiser and excellent breeder. Born in OH and came to IN in 1831. Thomas & 2 brothers received 20 acres of home farm & each built cabins, soon he purchased tracts owned by the 2 brothers and bought his father’s share. Ten years on 20 acres farming & built the Wilhoit House near the old home, added 80 acres tract adjoining and began breeding Shorthorns in 1851. First bought 2 heifers & a bull for $35/head unregistered. Later same breed in KY was $500/head. 1880 bought shorthorn bull Athelstan II for $350/head. This animal was the best prize winning blood at that time & his use marked one of the most striking epoch in American Shorthorn History. He was classed among the greatest breeders of the times.
