Biography

Ernest Henry Wilkins was born on 31 October 1902 in Overseal, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom, the second child and only son of Walter Wilkins and Jane "Minnie" Waterson.[1] [2]

So far no baptism/christening record has been found. I believe the family attended the Baptist chapel in Overseal, where Ern later married. I cannot find a baptism for his sister either Wilkins-1208 15:56, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Ern lived in Overseal all of his life; the 1911 & 1921 censuses record him living with his parents and sister Elizabeth Millicent "Lizzie" Wilkins on Woodville Road in the village.[3][4]

On 2 August 1930 he married Dorothy May Smith at Overseal Baptist Chapel[5] and they had two children; a son and daughter.[6]

Ern and Dot can be found in the 1939 Register living in Lullington Road, Overseal, with 2 closed records which I expect to be their children. [7] Ern is shown as a GPO conduit jointer (which is classed as "heavy work") while Dot is a House Wife.

Ern also worked in two of the region's biggest industries; at the Sanitary Pipe Yard[8] [9] and as a surface worker at the Colliery (coal mine).[10] [11] [12]

Ernest & Dorothy exchanged (& kept) birthday and Christmas cards, referring to each other as Dot & Ern or Dot and Ernie. There is a wonderfully formal one from where Dorothy is wished a Happy Christmas by E Wilkins - I imagine that must've come from early in their courting days.

On 6 October 1959, following a heart attack, Ern died in the General Hospital at Burton upon Trent, aged 56.[13] [14] He is buried with his parents in St Matthew's Churchyard in Overseal.[15]

Overseal was in Leicestershire until 1897, and has been in Derbyshire since then. It is in the area known locally as Ashby Wo(u)lds.
