Obituary 1 - Mrs. Ella H. W. Silliman, widow of the late Willard S. Silliman, who celebrated her ninety-sixth birthday a week ago today, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida H. Prall at 46 Swezey Street, Sunday forenoon. Her death was caused by a stroke and previously she had been in good health and able to be up and about. She was one of the oldest residents of Suffolk County, and came to Patchogue to make her home a little more than ten years ago. She was born in Ticonderoga, on April 7, 1835, the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Mary B. Wilkins. She was educated in Miss Emma Willard's seminary in Troy, one of the pioneer institutions for the higher education of women, and prepared for the teaching profession, which she carried on for many years, even after her marriage, her husband also being a school instructor. She travelled extensively about the country, teaching in many places. The major part of her teaching career was in the middle west although she taught for a time in Havana, Cuba (POTENTIAL TYPO - Havana, Schuyler, New York, USA) and in P.S. 114 in Canarsie. During recent years she had spent much of her time in penning poetry, having been very adept at this. She was also a writer of prose and finished a book, just before her death, on reflections of old age. She was possessed of a brilliant mind and kept in close touch with the affairs of the world, being an ardent reader and an interesting conversationalist. She cast her first vote in the presidential election of 1928. Before that she had never taken part in politics and had been Democratic in her leanings. However the opportunity to vote for Herbert Hoover, whom she admired greatly, led her to become a Republican convert at 93. She leaves four generations, the member of the fourth generation having been born Saturday forenoon to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Philips of Manhattan. She leaves a son, S.D. Silliman of Jamaica, and the daughter with whom she lived. Another son, Blanchard, principal of the Bay Avenue school from 1911 to 1918, died some years ago. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and the one great-great grandchild born the day before her death. The funeral is to be held this evening at the home at 8 o'clock, the Rev. John Robert Gee of the Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery tomorrow morning.[4]
