Biography

As per The Scone Advocate in late 1936:[1]

Mr. Joseph Wilkinson, nonagenarian resident of the city, but formerly of Brushy Hill, had advised local friends to expect to see him up this way at Xmas time.

His death was announced less than three years later:[2]

The death is announced from Strathfield, where he had been residing with a niece for a number of years, of Mr. Joseph Wilkinson, formerly fine old resident of Brushy Hill. The old gentleman, who would have celebrated his 97th birthday this month, paid periodical visits to the district, where he was invariably welcomed by very warm friends of many years standing in these parts. A kindly, likeable gentle, and warm hearted man, venerable and patriarchal also, we hope to be able to give further particulars of his life and long association with the district. If some close friend or relative would supply this information, our best thanks will be extended.

It appears that Joseph had been living at Strathfield with members of his extended family and that they arranged for his funeral and cremation on 26 Sep 1939:[3]

WILKINSON — The Relatives and Friends ol Mrs. S. BARRETT and FAMILY, of 27 Woodward Avenue. Strathfield, are Invited to attend the Funeral of her late dearly beloved STEP-UNCLE and their GREAT-UNCLE, Joseph Wilkinson; to leave T. J. Andrews' Funeral Chapel, 241 Liverpool Road, Ashfield. THIS DAY, at 1.45 p.m., for the Crematorium, Rookwood.

A couple of months later some details of his life were mentioned in an article:[4]

The late Mr. Joseph Wilkinsin, fine old resident of Brushy Hill, who passed on quite recently at the great age of 97 years, often mentioned that when a boy he was apprenticed to the pristine Maitland business of Pearson & Co., and with him, also a lad at the time, was the late Mr. J. W. Humphries, subsequently one of the principals of the old-established firm of Messrs. M. Campbell & Co., Pty, Ltd., great citizen of Muswellbrook, and a captain of industry in the Upper Hunter. Mr. Wilkinson came with his parents to Australia as early as 1842, the voyage from England occupying just on six months.

Research Notes

Was the 'Susannah Wilkinson' whose death was registered at Scone in 1875 (per NSW BDM 9642/1875) possibly Joseph's mother or sister? The parents' names thereon are 'John' and 'Susannah'.
