Biography

Hobert L (Wilkinson) Munson and his twin brother Hubert L (Wilkinson) Cowles were born February 8 1867 to Leonard L Wilkinson and wife Mary Ann Peck in Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut, USA.

Hobert L Wilkinson was adopted before 1870 by Ralph Munson and Mary Crane. Following adoption he was known as George Curtis Munson.

Hobert L. Wilkinson was adopted by Ralph and Mary Munson by/abt 1870 as he was not enumerated with his widowed mother Mary A (Peck) and sister Eleanora. He is found in the 1880 U S Census > CT.[1] He is also found in the 1900 US Federal Census[2] and in the 1910US Federal Census[3] and in the 1930 US Federal Census[4]

(Hobert's twin brother Hubert L Wilkinson AKA Hubert L Cowles was adopted, before 1870 by Horace (Hiram) Cowles of Morris, Connecticut.)

Hobert died 20 Feb 1940 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.

1.) Affidavit by Amos L. WILLIAMS (age 72 years) a practicing physician and the Registrar of the Town of Brookfield - 30 August, 1883 - states that he "was well acquainted with Leonard L. Wilkinson for many years before he enlisted into the United States Military Service and at the date of enlistment he was a sound able-bodied man - when he returned from the war he was out of health - broken down and suffering from incipient consumption. I treated him for the same according to best of my ability but he died of consumption June 6th 1867 leaving a wife who died of the same disease March 2nd 1873. By said WILKINSON the following children were born to them : Royal L. WILKINSON Sept. 9 1854; Reuben M. WILKINSON July 24 1856; Elanora WILKINSON Nov. 27 1859; and Hubert L. and Hobert L. WILKINSON (twins) Feb. 8 1867. [Following], she however remarried after WILKINSON's death, Jas [James?] U. BALLARD Oct 27th 1871 but died without issue of last marriage. The afore facts are found in my books as well as upon the records of the town of Brookfield of which I am Registrar. These 2 boys (twins) have been adopted by other parties and have taken the names of the parties adopting them"

2.) Affidavit by Clark S. PECK (age 57 years) - 10 October 1883 - attesting he "was well acquainted with the late Leonard L WILKINSON from the date of his return from the war till his death. I lived near him." [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]

3.) Affidavit by Sherman FOOTE (age 68 years) - 30 August 1883 -"and that we were well and personally acquainted with Leonard L. WILKINSON for 8 years and that we were near neighbors to him before he went to the war and after his return." [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]

4.) Affidavit by Hubert L. COWLES (age 19 years) - 30 October 1886 - before Clerk of Probate for Woodbury district - " I am the son of Leonard L. WILKINSON, late a private in Co. E 12th Regt. of Conn. Vols. War of 1861, and adopted son of Hiram (sic) COWLES of Morris, Litchfield, Conn. I certify my Post office address is Hubert L. COWLES, Morris, Litchfield." [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]

5.) Affidavit by George C. MUNSON (age 19 years) - 19 March 1886 - " I am a son of Leonard L. WILKINSON late a private in Co. E 12th Regiment of Conn. Vols. After my fathers death I was adopted by Ralph MUNSON of Bethlehem, Conn. and he was appointed my guardian. Since my adoption I have been called, and have written my name George C. MUNSON. My name before adoption was Hobert L. WILKINSON. I sign this deposition by my adopted name of George C. MUNSON. towit: Residence - Bethlehem; Litchfield, Conn. [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]

6.) Affidavit of Eleanora WILKINSON (age 26 years) - 17 March 1886 District of Norwalk Probate Court, wife of John PORTER; citizen of Willton, Fairfield, Conn. "That I am the daughter of the above named Leonard L. WILKINSON and I am the wife of John PORTER so that my present name is Eleanora PORTER. The following is my Post Office address written in my own hand followed by my name in my own handwriting. My Post Office address is Willton Center, Fairfield County Conn." Ellenora PORTER [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]

7.) Statement before Notary Public, Westport, Litchfield, Conn. November 13, 1888 : "Personally appeared before the undersigned authority Eleanora Gertrude PORTER [LOCKWOOD crossed out with PORTER written above?] formerly Elenora Gertrude WILKINSON now of the town of Norwalk in said County age 28 years who being duly sworn says in relation to Pension claim No. 299.671 of Ralph MUNSON as guardian of the minor children of Leonard L. WILKINSON late of Co E 12th Conn. Vols - that she the deponent aforesaid is the child of the said WILKINSON - that according to her best knowledge and belief all of the said children of her said father are now living - that two of her said brothers Royal L. and Reuben M. are now living in New Jersey - the deponent is at present unable to obtain their PO address - that Hubert L. is living in Litchfield Conn - that Hobert L. is living in Morris Conn - that none of said children have ever received any minors pension according to her the best knowledge of deponent - that her address is as follows - Mrs. John PORTER, Norwalk Fairfield Co. Conn. care of George W. MILLS" [nothing else different or significant in this affidavit]
