Betty was born on 20 April 1885 at Barnsley, Yorkshire, the daughter of William and Mary Ann Wilkinson.
In the 1891 census Betty was living with her parents and siblings at 183 St Philips Rd, Sheffield. She was aged 6 years and attending school. [RG12/3819 97 Pg 19]
In 1901 the family was living at 78 Fawcett St, Sheffield. Betty, aged 16, was a dressmaker. [RG13/4366 31 Pg 5]
Betty Wilkinson married Lawrence Gadd on 4 March 1906 at St. Stephen's Church, Netherthorpe, Sheffield. Their marriage certificate recorded Lawrence was a bachelor aged 21 and a wheel maker. His father was named as Henry Gadd, a rivet forger. Betty was a spinster aged 21. Her father was named as William Wilkinson, a labourer. At the time of their marriage both Lawrence and Betty gave their address as 78 Fawcett St. Their witnesses were William Burgin and Annie Wilkinson.
This couple had two children named Amy Gadd born 17 January 1907 and Doris Gadd born 14 May 1909, both born at Sheffield. Amy was baptised on 6 February 1907 at Attercliffe, Sheffield. Her parents were then living at 54 Selborne St and Lawrence was a wheel maker.
In the 1911 census this family was living with Betty’s parents William and Mary Ann Wilkinson at 62 Bellefield St, Sheffield. Lawrence, aged 26, was an insurance agent. Betty was also aged 26. Amy was aged 4 and Doris aged 1.
Lawrence died later that year at Sheffield aged 27 years. He was buried at Tinsley Cemetery with his mother on 28 October 1911.
Betty remarried to John Edwin Heley in 1919 [Marriage Dec Qtr 1919/Sheffield 9c 1580].
This couple had one son named Jack Heley born 22 August 1922 [1939 Register].
John Edwin Heley died in 1927 aged 38 years. He was buried on 2 June 1927 at St. Philip's Church, Sheffield. The burial register recorded John usually lived at 62 Bellefield St but had died at York City Fairfield Sanatorium, Skelton. [The York Corporation bought Fairfield House in 1918 and opened it as a tuberculosis sanatorium in the following year.]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Betty was still residing at 62 Bellefield Street, Sheffield. Her date of birth was recorded as 20 April 1885, making her aged 54. Son Jack, aged 17, was working as a butcher's assistant.
Betty Heeley [sic] died in 1961 aged 75 years. She was buried on 22 February 1961 at St. Philip's Church [NP 1328]. Her address was recorded in the burial register as 62 Bellefield Rd.
