Biography

Henry Wilkinson was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Henry was born on the 8th January 1840 and was baptised on 2nd February 1840 in the Anglican Parish of Narellan, New South Wales.[1]

Henry married Sidney Hamilton on 29th December 1859. Their marriage certificate bears a note that permission to marry was given by Henry's father and a Justice of the Peace, as both Henry and Sidney were under the age of 21 years at the time.[2] After 11 children and some 43 years of marriage, they were divorced on 16th December 1902.[3]

Extracts from his Obituary:
“In early manhood Mr Wilkinson sustained serious injuries through a fall from his horse, the result being that he suffered a permanent deafness, which, however, did not affect his naturally cheerful and hopeful outlook on life.

Deceased during and prior to the breaking out of the western gold fields (Turon, etc.) was engaged in carrying pursuits, and had his share of the toils and adventures incidental to carrying in those expanding years, both from Penrith to the diggings, and up and down to Sydney, which at the period (40 to 50 years ago), was itself in the developemental stage, as regards the great "accelerations" of progress that have since matured. He remembered the days prior to the railways when the "Punt" was one of the institutions of the Nepean. Mr Wilkinson had all the born Australian's love of horses, and broke in many of his own teams and saddle horses.

The surviving members of the Wilkinson family, are— Messrs John (Sofala), James (Windsor), Mesdames J Quinn, Geo Paul (Lakemba), Barkley Haydon (Campbelltown), William Butcher [sic] (Sydney), W J Fuller and G Clarke (Penrith). A sister of deceased (Mrs Fraser) and two brothers, William and Thomas, reside at Mudgee.”[4][5]

Henry's remains were buried at Kingswood Cemetery (now known as Penrith General Cemetery). His grave is unmarked (as at August 2019).[6]
