Biography

Catherine Williams is estimated to have been born about 1670 based on her marriage to an older man, while still being of childbearing age. There is no detail about her life before 1699 apart from her being a member of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting at the time of marrying widower William Brown in May of that year.

Marriage

William was a member of the Concord Quaker Meeting in Delaware County. He declared there his intentions of marriage, receiving a Certificate of Clearness on the 8th of May, 1699.[1]

In the same months, April and May, William also accompanied Catherine to the Philadelphia Meetings to lay their intentions before the community there, entailing a fair bit of travelling to and fro. The couple were given approval to marry at the Philadelphia meeting dated the 26th May, 1699 and so were married after that date.[2]

Family

Catherine and William Brown had three children during her short marriage: Samuel born 1700, and possibly named after a relative of hers, Hannah born 1701, and Mary born 1706.[3]

Without any sources to confirm otherwise, it is confidently estimated that Catherine died in the years between the birth of her daughter in June 1706, and the marriage in 1711 of William to his fourth wife, Mary Matthews.

Research Notes

At present there are no sources to confirm details about Catherine's parents, her birth and her death. There are no meeting minutes recording the births of her children, just the entry detailing the wives and children of William Brown, after the fact. It's quite possible that Catherine's first name is more properly Katrina, Kattrin or Katherine as this spelling pattern figure more prominently in her various marriage documents as well as the documents referring to children who were obviously named after her. This profile detail can be changed once further records confirm it.

Catherine did not marry William Rogers and I have left a note on his profile to that effect.
